Abstract

A process is disclosed for making CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 . The process involves reacting CH 2 ClF with CClF═CF 2 in an addition reaction zone in the presence of an aluminum halide composition having a bulk formula of AlCl x Br y F 3-x-y wherein the average value of x is 0 to 3, the average value of y is 0 to 3−x, provided that the average values of x and y are not both 0. Also disclosed is a process for making CH 2 FCF 2 CF 3 that involves reacting the CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 with HF in a fluorination reaction zone in the presence of a fluorination catalyst. Also disclosed is a process for making CHF═CFCF 3 that involves dehydrofluorinating the CH 2 FCF 2 CF 3 .

Claims (8)

1. A process for making CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 , comprising:

reacting CH 2 ClF with CClF═CF 2 in an addition reaction zone in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of an aluminum halide composition having a bulk formula of AlCl x Br y F 3-x-y wherein the average value of x is 0 to 3, the average value of y is 0 to 3−x, provided that the average values of x and y are not both 0.

2. A process for making CH 2 FCF 2 CF 3 comprising:

reacting CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 produced by the process of claim 1 with HF in a fluorination reaction zone in the presence of a fluorination catalyst to produce a product comprising CH 2 FCF 2 CF 3 .

3. The process of claim 2 wherein CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 and other compounds of the formula CH 2 XCFXCX 2 F, wherein two X are Cl and the other two X are F that are present in the effluent from the addition reaction zone, are fed to the fluorination reaction zone.

4. A process for making CHF═CFCF 3 , comprising:

dehydrofluorinating CH 2 FCF 2 CF 3 produced by the process of claim 2 to form CHF═CFCF 3 .

5. The process of claim 4 wherein CH 2 ClCF 2 CClF 2 and other compounds of the formula CH 2 XCFXCX 2 F, wherein two X are Cl and the other two X are F that are present in the effluent from the addition reaction zone, are fed to the fluorination reaction zone.
