Abstract

A magnetic resonance imaging configuration to straighten and otherwise homogenize the field lines in the imaging portion, creating improved image quality. Through use of calibrated corrective coils, magnetic field lines can be manipulated to improve uniformity and image quality. Additionally, when the apparatus is composed of non-ferromagnetic materials, field strengths can be increased to overcome limitations of Iron-based systems such as by use of superconductivity. A patient positioning apparatus allowing multi-positioning is also disclosed.

Claims (31)

1. A magnetic resonance imaging device comprising:

a primary magnet, said primary magnet generating a primary field through a patient-receiving portion therethrough, said primary field containing inhomogeneities within the patient-receiving portion and fringe fields outside thereof;

a secondary magnet, said secondary magnet generating a secondary field, said secondary field substantially countering said fringe fields produced by said primary magnet outside of the patient-receiving portion; and

at least one correction magnet, said at least one correction magnet substantially correcting said inhomogeneities and substantially straightening field lines associated with said primary field within said patient-receiving portion, thereby improving field uniformity,

wherein said primary magnet comprises a first upper coil and a second lower coil, and wherein said at least one correction magnet comprises respective at least one upper corrective coil and at least one lower corrective coil,

wherein the distance between said first upper coil and said second lower coil is greater than the distance between said at least one upper corrective coil and said at least one lower corrective coil.

2. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said primary and secondary magnets are superconductive magnets.

3. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 2 , further comprising:

cooling means to cool said superconductive magnets to superconductive temperatures.

4. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 3 , wherein said cooling means is selected from the group consisting of immersion cooling, thermal siphoning, conduction cooling and combinations thereof.

5. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 3 , further comprising:

support means for supporting said primary, secondary and at least one correction magnet; and

additional support means for supporting said cooling means.

6. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one correction magnet is a superconducting magnet.

7. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 6 , further comprising:

cooling means to cool said superconductive magnets to superconductive temperatures.

8. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 7 , wherein said cooling means is selected from the group consisting of immersion cooling, thermal siphoning, conduction cooling and combinations thereof.

9. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one correction magnet is selected from the group consisting of at least two correction magnets, at least three correction magnets and at least four correction magnets.

10. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein respective correction magnets are spaced apart from one another in unequal spacings.

11. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 10 , wherein said spacings are determined dynamically.

12. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 10 , wherein said spacings are precomputed.

13. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein respective correction magnets have differing operational current strengths.

14. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , further comprising a frame, said primary, secondary and at least one correction magnets being secured to said frame.

15. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 14 , wherein said frame comprises a non-ferromagnetic material.

16. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 15 , wherein said non-ferromagnetic material is selected from the group consisting of concrete and aluminum.

17. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of said frame comprises Iron.

18. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

positioning means to position an anatomical region of interest of a patient substantially within said patient-receiving portion, wherein said positioning means positions said patient horizontally, vertically, sitting down, rotated, angled or translated.

19. The magnetic resonance imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said primary field has a strength selected from the group consisting of less than 0.5T, 0.5-1.0T, 1.0-1.5T, 1.5-2.0T, 2.0-2.5T, 2.5-3.0T, 3.0T-3.1T, 3.1T-3.2T, 3.2T-3.5T, 3.5T-4.0T and above 4.0T.
