Abstract

The present invention is directed to an improved nail and an associated method for implanting the nail into a patient's bone. The nail preferably includes a proximal end, a distal end, a plurality of spiral blades (e.g., vanes) and a cannulated bore extending from the proximal end to the distal end so that in use an injectable material such as, for example PCL material, can be injected into the patient's bone through the cannulated bore formed in the nail. The nail also preferably includes a cutout portion at the distal end thereof in order to direct the outflow of injectable material through the cannulated bore. The cutout portion preferably is configured to facilitate the injectable material outflowing past the distal end of the nail and superiorly of the nail when the nail is properly implanted and positioned in situ.

Claims (23)

1 . A nail for insertion into a patient's bone, the nail comprising:

a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis, a plurality of spiral blades extending from the distal end thereof, a cannulated bore extending from the proximal end to the distal end, and a cutout portion formed at the distal end thereof, the cutout portion being in communication with the cannulated bore so that, in use, an injectable material is injected into the patient's bone through the cannulated bore and flows out of the cutout portion formed in the nail.

2 . The nail of claim 1 , wherein the cut out portion directs the injectable material superiorly of the longitudinal axis of the nail when implanted.

3 . The nail of claim 1 , wherein the cutout portion extends about 180° circumferentially about the longitudinal axis of the nail.

4 . The nail of claim 3 , wherein the nail includes four spiral blades that each spirally twist about the longitudinal axis, the first spiral blade being diametrically opposed to the third spiral blade, the second spiral blade being diametrically opposed to the fourth spiral blade, wherein the cutout portion extends from the second spiral blade to the fourth spiral blade and includes a portion of the first, second and fourth spiral blades.

5 . The nail of claim 3 , wherein the cutout portion forms a curved surface.

6 . The nail of claim 3 , wherein the cutout portion includes a tapered surface at a proximal end thereof.

7 . The nail of claim 1 , wherein the injectable material is PCL.

8 . The nail of claim 1 , further comprising an intramedullary nail having a bore, the nail passing through the bore for treatment of a proximal femur fracture.

9 . The nail of claim 1 , wherein the nail includes four spiral blades that each spirally twist about the longitudinal axis, the spiral blades having a proximal end and a distal end.

10 . The nail of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the spiral blades has a blade width W that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade.

11 . The nail of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the spiral blades has a blade width W that remains constant from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade.

12 . The nail of claim 11 , wherein the first spiral blade is diametrically opposed to the third spiral blade and the second spiral blade is diametrically opposed to the fourth spiral blade, the second and fourth spiral blades including a blade width W that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade, the first and third spiral blades incorporating a blade width W that remains constant from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade.

13 . The nail of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the spiral blades has a blade height H that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade until the spiral blade reaches an apex at which point the blade height H decreases.

14 . The nail of claim 13 , wherein one of the spiral blades has a blade height H that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade until the spiral blade reaches an apex at which point the blade height H decreases and the other three spiral blades include a blade height H that remains constant from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade.

15 . The nail of claim 9 , wherein the first spiral blade is diametrically opposed to the third spiral blade and the second spiral blade is diametrically opposed to the fourth spiral blade, the second and fourth spiral blades including a blade width W that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade, the first and third spiral blades including a blade width W that remains constant from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade, the first spiral blade has a blade height H that increases from the distal end of the spiral blade to the proximal end of the spiral blade until the first spiral blade reaches an apex at which point the blade height H decreases, the second, third and fourth spiral blades each include a blade height H that remains constant from the distal end of the spiral blades to the proximal end of the spiral blades.

16 . The nail of claim 9 , further comprising a non-bladed portion having a maximum diameter D 2 , the diametrically opposed spiral blades define a maximum diameter D 1 , D 1 being less than D 2 .

17 . A method for implanting a nail into a patient's bone, the method comprising the steps of:

(i) inserting the nail into the patient's bone;

(ii) coupling a delivery system containing a cartridge of injectable PCL material to a proximal end of the nail;

(iii) injecting the PCL material into the patient's bone through a cannulated bore and cutout portion formed in the nail; and

(iv) removing the delivery system.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the cutout portion directs the injectable PCL material superiorly of the nail.
