Abstract

A device for directing energy to a target volume of tissue includes a proximal portion including a first antenna subassembly extending therethrough, and a distal portion including a second antenna subassembly. The first antenna subassembly includes a leaky-wave antenna assembly having an outer conductor and an inner conductor disposed within the outer conductor. The distal portion of the device is attached to the inner conductor. The outer conductor includes a plurality of radiating apertures defined in a distal portion thereof and is configured for radiating energy substantially uniformly along a longitudinal axis of the proximal portion.

Claims (29)

1. A device for directing energy to a target volume of tissue, comprising:

a dual antenna assembly including a proximal portion and a distal portion;

the proximal portion of the dual antenna assembly including a first antenna assembly extending therethrough, wherein the first antenna assembly includes a leaky-wave antenna assembly having an outer conductor and an inner conductor disposed within the outer conductor, wherein the outer conductor includes a plurality of radiating apertures defined in at least a distal portion thereof and configured for radiating energy substantially uniformly along a longitudinal axis of the proximal portion of the dual antenna assembly; and

the distal portion of the dual antenna assembly including a second antenna assembly.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein each aperture has a size and extends at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the outer conductor.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the size and the angle of each aperture is varied in relation to the other apertures such that the energy radiated along the longitudinal axis of the outer conductor is substantially uniform.

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the size and the angle of each aperture is varied in relation to the other apertures such that the energy radiated from each radiating aperture is substantially the same.

5. The device of claim 2 , wherein the second antenna assembly is a helical antenna assembly.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the helical antenna assembly is capable of operating in a first mode of operation for directing energy to a first portion of the target volume of tissue and a second mode of operation for directing energy to a second portion of the target volume of tissue.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the helical antenna assembly includes a helical antenna radiating section.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein when the device operates in the first mode of operation, the helical antenna radiating section radiates energy in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the helical antenna element.

9. The device of claim 7 , wherein when the device operates in the second mode of operation, the helical antenna radiating section radiates energy along the longitudinal axis of the helical antenna element.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second antenna assembly is a dipole antenna assembly.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second antenna assembly is a monopole antenna assembly.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second antenna assembly is a microstrip antenna assembly.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the microstrip antenna assembly includes a central conductor electrically-coupled to the inner conductor of the leaky wave antenna assembly.

14. A method for directing energy to a target volume of tissue, comprising the steps of:

positioning a dual antenna assembly for delivery of energy to the target volume of tissue;

operating a leaky-wave antenna assembly extending through a proximal portion of the dual antenna assembly, whereby a first portion of the energy is radiated through a plurality of apertures defined in the leaky-wave antenna assembly, the apertures configured for radiating energy substantially uniformly along a longitudinal axis of the leaky-wave antenna assembly; and

operating an antenna assembly disposed in a distal portion of the dual antenna assembly and electrically coupled to the leaky-wave antenna assembly.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the energy radiated from each radiating aperture of the leaky-wave antenna assembly is substantially the same.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the antenna assembly disposed in the distal portion of the dual antenna assembly is a helical antenna assembly.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein operating the antenna assembly disposed in the distal portion of the dual antenna assembly includes the step of:

operating the helical antenna assembly in a first mode of operation to perform a first procedure on a first portion of the target volume of tissue, the first portion located substantially adjacent to a longitudinal portion of the helical antenna assembly.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein operating the antenna assembly disposed in the distal portion of the dual antenna assembly further includes the step of:

operating the helical antenna assembly in a second mode of operation to perform a second procedure on a second portion of the target volume of tissue, the second portion located distal to an end portion of the helical antenna assembly.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the antenna assembly disposed in the distal portion of the dual antenna assembly is at least one of a dipole antenna assembly, a monopole antenna assembly, and a microstrip antenna assembly.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of:

transmitting energy from an energy source to the dual antenna assembly.
