Abstract

Systems and methods for performing a simplified risk assessment are provided. A historical transaction value for past transactions associated with related promissory payments is maintained. A request is received from a merchant to determine authorization of a financial transaction associated with a proffered promissory payment. The historical transaction value associated with the related promissory payments is accessed and determination, based on the historical transaction value, of whether to authorize the financial transaction based on a risk score or whether to authorize the financial transaction based on data stored in a negative database is made.

Claims (52)

1. A computer-implemented method for determining authorization of a financial transaction, the method comprising:

maintaining, at a transaction processor, a historical transaction value for past transactions associated with related promissory payments;

receiving, at the transaction processor via a network, a request from a merchant to determine authorization of a financial transaction associated with a proffered promissory payment;

determining, at the transaction processor, whether the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment;

accessing, by the transaction processor when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment, the historical transaction value associated with the related promissory payments; and

determining, at the transaction processor based on the historical transaction value, to authorize the financial transaction based on absence of negative data for the customer associated with the promissory payment stored in a negative database when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment; or

performing a more detailed risk assessment based on a plurality of factors associated with the financial transaction when the merchant has not authorized simplified risk assessment or when negative data associated with the customer appears in the negative database.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the data stored in the negative database when the historical transaction value meets a threshold.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment that calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when the historical transaction value does not meet a threshold.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment that calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when a value of the financial transaction exceeds a transaction limit set by the merchant.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining based on criteria set by the merchant whether to authorize the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment or whether to authorize the financial transaction based on data stored in a negative database.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

maintaining an indication of whether funds were available for past authorized transactions associated with the related promissory payments;

accessing the indication;

authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment, wherein the risk assessment calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when the indication is negative; and

authorizing the financial transaction based on data stored in the negative database when the indication is positive.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing an account status of a promissory account associated with the proffered promissory payment;

authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment, wherein the risk assessment calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when the account status is negative; and

authorizing the financial transaction based on data stored in the negative database when the account status is positive.

8. A computer-implemented method for determining authorization of a financial transaction, the method comprising:

maintaining, at a transaction processor, a historical transaction score that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments;

receiving, at the transaction processor via a network, a request from a merchant to determine authorization of a financial transaction associated with a proffered promissory payment;

determining, at the transaction processor, whether the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment;

accessing, by the transaction processor when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment, the historical transaction score associated with the related promissory payments; and

determining, at the transaction processor based on the historical transaction score, to authorize the financial transaction based on absence of negative data for the customer associated with the promissory payment stored in a negative database when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

performing a more detailed risk assessment based on a plurality of factors associated with the financial transaction when the merchant has not authorized simplified risk assessment or when negative data associated with the customer appears in the negative database.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein maintaining a historical transaction score comprises maintaining a historical transaction score that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments made by a check-writer, and

wherein the financial transaction associated with the proffered promissory payment is made by the check-writer.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein maintaining a historical transaction score comprises maintaining a historical transaction score that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments made using a checking account, and

wherein the financial transaction associated with the proffered promissory payment is made using the checking account.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the data stored in the negative database when the historical transaction value meets a threshold.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment that calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when the historical transaction value does not meet a threshold.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment that calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when a value of the financial transaction exceeds a transaction limit set by the merchant.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising determining based on criteria set by the merchant whether to authorize the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment or whether to authorize the financial transaction based on data stored in a negative database.

16. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

accessing an account status of a promissory account associated with the proffered promissory payment;

authorizing the financial transaction based on the more detailed risk assessment, wherein the risk assessment calculates a risk score for the proffered promissory payment when the account status is negative; and

authorizing the financial transaction based on data stored in the negative database when the account status is positive.

17. A computer program product, comprising a computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable program code adapted to be executed to facilitate:

maintaining a historical transaction value that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments;

receiving, via a network, a request from a merchant to determine authorization of a financial transaction associated with a proffered promissory payment;

determining whether the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment;

accessing, when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment, the historical transaction score associated with the related promissory payments; and

determining, based on the historical transaction value, to authorize the financial transaction based on absence of negative data for the customer associated with the promissory payment stored in a negative database when the merchant has authorized simplified risk assessment.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the computer readable program code is further adapted to be executed to facilitate:

performing a more detailed risk assessment based on a plurality of factors associated with the financial transaction when the merchant has not authorized simplified risk assessment or when negative data associated with the customer appears in the negative database.

19. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein maintaining a historical transaction value comprises maintaining a historical transaction value that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments made by a check-writer, and

wherein the financial transaction associated with the proffered promissory payment is made by the check-writer.

20. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein maintaining a historical transaction value comprises maintaining a historical transaction value that is based on past transactions associated with related promissory payments made using a checking account, and

wherein the financial transaction associated with the proffered promissory payment is made using the checking account.
