Abstract

A drainless reverse osmosis (RO) water purification system provides relatively pure water for on-demand dispensing, while recycling brine to a domestic hot water system. The drainless purification system includes a pre-filter catalyst cartridge for removing chlorine-based contaminants from a tap water supply upstream from an RO membrane. The catalyst is regularly refreshed by a high through-flow of water to a conventional cold water dispense faucet, thereby significantly prolonging the service life of the RO membrane. The RO membrane is incorporated into a multi-cartridge unit adapted for facilitated slide-out removal and replacement as needed. A control valve recycles brine from the RO membrane to the hot water system during pure water production, and recirculates tap water through the RO membrane when a pure water reservoir is substantially filled. The multi-cartridge unit may further include an air filtration system for providing a flow of filtered air.

Claims (46)

1. A water purification system, comprising:

a manifold housing including a manifold coupled to a tap water inflow from a water supply system and a purified water outflow port;

a cartridge unit including at least one water purification cartridge for unidirectional installation within said manifold housing in flow-coupled connection with said manifold to produce relatively purified water; and

a latch mechanism for releasibly retaining said cartridge unit in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch mechanism comprising first and second magnets mounted respectively on said cartridge unit and on said manifold housing, and means for rotating one of said first and second magnets relative to the other between a first attraction position with unlike poles aligned and a second repulsion position with like poles aligned.

2. The water purification system of claim 1 wherein said cartridge unit comprises a multi-cartridge unit having a plurality of water purification cartridges.

The water purification system of claim 1 wherein said cartridge unit is slidably movable relative to said manifold housing between an advanced position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold and a retracted position disengaged from said manifold, said first and second magnets in said first position retaining said cartridge unit in said advanced position, and said first and second magnets in said second position permitting easy sliding displacement of said cartridge unit to said retracted position.

4. The water purification system of claim 1 wherein the rotatable magnet is carried by said cartridge unit.

5. The water purification system of claim 4 wherein said magnet rotating means comprises a manually rotatable handle carried by said cartridge unit.

6. The water purification system of claim 4 wherein said latch mechanism further comprises a latch pin removably engageable with a matingly shaped slot defined by said cartridge unit, when said cartridge unit is in flow-coupled relation with said manifold.

The water purification system of claim 6 wherein said latch pin is movably supported by said manifold housing for vertical displacement by gravity, and further including a cam ramp on said cartridge unit for shifting said latch pin upwardly a sufficient distance to permit movement of said cartridge unit to said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch pin being vertically aligned with said cartridge unit slot for gravity-caused engagement therewith upon said cartridge unit reaching said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold.

8. The water purification system of claim 7 wherein said cam ramp is formed on said first magnet.

The water purification system of claim 8 wherein one axial side of said slot is defined by a part-circle flange carried for rotation with said first magnet, said part-circle flange being displaced with said first magnet upon rotation thereof to said second position to permit free sliding displacement of said cartridge unit relative to said latch pin toward said retracted position.

10. The water purification system of claim 1 wherein said latch mechanism further comprises a latch pin removably engageable with a matingly shaped slot defined by said cartridge unit, when said cartridge unit is in flow-coupled relation with said manifold.

11. A water purification system, comprising:

a manifold housing including a manifold coupled to a tap water inflow from a water supply system and a purified water outflow port;

a cartridge unit including at least one water purification cartridge for unidirectional installation within said manifold housing in flow-coupled connection with said manifold to produce relatively purified water;

a latch mechanism for releasibly retaining said cartridge unit in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch mechanism comprising a latch pin removably engageable with a matingly shaped slot defined by said cartridge unit, when said cartridge unit is in flow-coupled relation with said manifold; and

a flange defining at least one axial side of said slot and rotatable to permit unobstructed displacement of said cartridge unit from said latch in in a retraction direction for removal and replacement thereof.

The water purification system of claim 11 wherein said latch mechanism further comprises first and second magnets mounted respectively on said cartridge unit and on said manifold housing, and means for rotating said first magnet relative to said second magnet between a first attraction position with unlike poles aligned and a second repulsion position with like poles aligned.

The water purification system of claim 12 wherein said cartridge unit is slidably movable relative to said manifold housing between an advanced position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold and a retracted position disengaged from said manifold, said first and second magnets in said first position retaining said cartridge unit in said advanced position, and said first and second magnets in said second position permitting easy sliding displacement of said cartridge unit to said retracted position.

14. The water purification system of claim 12 wherein said magnet rotating means comprises a manually rotatable handle carried by said cartridge unit.

The water purification system of claim 12 wherein said latch pin is movably supported by said manifold housing for vertical displacement by gravity, and further including a cam ramp on said cartridge unit for shifting said latch pin upwardly a sufficient distance to permit movement of said cartridge unit to said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch pin being vertically aligned with said cartridge unit slot for gravity-caused engagement therewith upon said cartridge unit reaching said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold.

16. The water purification system of claim 15 wherein said cam ramp is formed on said first magnet.

The water purification system of claim 16 wherein said flange comprises a part-circle flange carried for rotation with said first magnet, said part-circle flange being displaced with said first magnet upon rotation thereof to said second position to permit free sliding displacement of said cartridge unit relative to said latch pin toward said retracted position.

18. A reverse osmosis water purification system, comprising:

a reverse osmosis cartridge having a tap water inflow port for receiving a tap water inflow from a water supply system to produce a supply of relatively purified water discharged from said cartridge via a purified water outflow port, and a supply of brine having impurities concentrated therein and discharged from said cartridge via a brine outflow port;

a storage reservoir coupled to said purified water outflow port for receiving and storing a predetermined volume of the produced purified water for on-demand dispensing;

a purified water dispense faucet coupled to at least one of said purified water outflow port and to said storage reservoir for dispensing the produced purified water;

a multi-cartridge unit including said reverse osmosis cartridge and adapted for unidirectional installation within a manifold housing, said manifold housing being adapted for removable unidirectional seated installation of said multi-cartridge unit, said manifold housing and said multi-cartridge unit further including inter-engageable ported members for sealed fluid-coupled engagement when said multi-cartridge unit is in an advanced position installed into said manifold, said multi-cartridge unit being movable from said advanced position to a retracted position within said manifold housing disengaged from said manifold; and

a latch mechanism comprising a first magnet rotatably carried by said multi-cartridge unit and a second magnet carried by said manifold housing, said first magnet being rotatable between an attraction position with unlike poles substantially aligned with said second magnet for retaining said multi-cartridge unit in said advanced position, and a repulsion position with like poles substantially aligned with said second magnet to permit displacement of said multi-cartridge unit to said retracted position.

19. A water purification system, comprising:

a manifold housing including a manifold coupled to a tap water inflow from a water supply system and a purified water outflow port;

a cartridge unit including at least one water purification cartridge for unidirectional installation within said manifold housing in flow-coupled connection with said manifold to produce relatively purified water; and

a latch mechanism for releasibly retaining said cartridge unit in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch mechanism comprising first and second magnets mounted respectively on said cartridge unit and on said manifold housing, including means for moving said first magnet relative to said second magnet between a first attraction position with unlike poles aligned and a second repulsion position with like poles aligned, and a latch pin removably engageable with a matingly shaped slot defined by said cartridge unit, when said cartridge unit is in flow-coupled relation with said manifold.

The water purification system of claim 19 wherein said cartridge unit is slidably movable relative to said manifold housing between an advanced position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold and a retracted position disengaged from said manifold, said first and second magnets in said first position retaining said cartridge unit in said advanced position, and said first and second magnets in said second position permitting easy sliding displacement of said cartridge unit to said retracted position.

21. The water purification system of claim 19 wherein said magnet rotating means comprises a manually rotatable handle carried by said cartridge unit.

The water purification system of claim 19 wherein said latch pin is movably supported by said manifold housing for vertical displacement by gravity, and further including a cam ramp on said cartridge unit for shifting said latch pin upwardly a sufficient distance to permit movement of said cartridge unit to said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch pin being vertically aligned with said cartridge unit slot for gravity-caused engagement therewith upon said cartridge unit reaching said position in flow-coupled connection with said manifold.

23. The water purification system of claim 22 wherein said cam ramp is formed on said first magnet.

The water purification system of claim 23 wherein one axial side of said slot is defined by a part-circle flange carried for rotation with said first magnet, said part-circle flange being displaced with said first magnet upon rotation thereof to said second position to permit free sliding displacement of said cartridge unit relative to said latch pin toward said retracted position.

25. A water purification system, comprising:

a manifold housing including a manifold coupled to a tap water inflow from a water supply system and a purified water outflow port;

a cartridge unit including at least one water purification cartridge for unidirectional installation within said manifold housing in flow-coupled connection with said manifold to produce relatively purified water;

a latch mechanism for releasibly retaining said cartridge unit in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, said latch mechanism comprising at least one downwardly protruding tab carried on a vertically reciprocal slide bar selectively extendable into a respective pocket in said manifold housing for mechanically locking said cartridge unit in flow-coupled connection with said manifold, and said tab retractable for pull-out disengagement from said pocket for providing access to and replacement of said cartridge unit.

26. The water purification system of claim 25 wherein said downwardly protruding tab is carried at a lower end of the vertically reciprocal slide bar and the slide bar having an upper end pivotally coupled to an externally accessible pull handle.

The water purification system of claim 26 wherein said vertically reciprocal slide bar resides within a guide track formed from an inboard side of a front panel of said manifold housing, said bar slidably residing within said guide track for positioning said downwardly protruding tab between being extendable into and retractable out from said pocket.

28. The water purification system of claim 27 wherein said latch mechanism further comprises first and second magnets mounted respectively on said cartridge unit and on said manifold housing, and means for sliding said first magnet relative to said second magnet between a first attraction position with unlike poles aligned and a second repulsion position with like poles aligned.
