Abstract

Systemic delivery of insulin to a mammalian host is accomplished by inhalation of a dry powder of insulin. It has been found that dry insulin powders are rapidly absorbed through the alveolar regions of the lungs.

26 . A therapeutic composition in solid dose form comprising insulin, a carbohydrate, and an additional carrier wherein

the therapeutic composition is in an amorphous state,

the therapeutic composition is a powder suitable for pulmonary administration, and

the insulin, the carbohydrate and the additional carrier are dispersed within particles of the powder.

27 . The therapeutic composition of claim 26 , wherein the additional carrier is an amino acid.

28 . The therapeutic composition of claim 26 , wherein the additional carrier is a peptide or protein.
