Abstract

A system and method to visually navigate hierarchical data groups are provided. If a user wishes to graphically view network traffic data for a particular business group of network nodes, a network topology navigation tool may be provided to display to the user such information that is relevant to the selected business group and the corresponding hierarchy level. The user may also be permitted to access more detailed connection information through appropriate drill-downs.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subset of the hierarchy is formed by identifying one or more connected logical groups based on the traffic information, each connected logical group having at least one element that has communicated with at least one element within the selected logical groups.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more connected logical groups are selected for display from among the connected logical groups having a same parent and at a same level of the hierarchy as the selected logical group.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more connected logical groups are selected for display from among the connected logical groups at a top level of the hierarchy.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the topology tool is configured to display one or more traffic statistics associated with one or more of the connections based on the traffic information.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein connections between elements within the selected logical group and elements of the other logical group are displayed as a single connecting line between the representation of the selected logical group and the representation of the other logical group.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lines to the representation of the other logical group are displayed only if the traffic information indicates that there has been traffic between at least one element within the selected logical group and at least one element of the other logical group.

10. A system comprising:

a topology database that provides a description of hierarchy of a network organized by logical groups,

a data collector that is configured to retrieve traffic information associated with the network,

a filter that is configured to identify active connections associated with at least one selected logical group based on the traffic information, and

a topology tool that is configured to display a subset of the hierarchy based on the active connections associated with the selected logical group.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein active connections between the elements within the selected logical group are displayed as lines between the elements, and active connections from elements within the selected logical group to elements of an other logical group are displayed as a single connecting line between the selected logical group and the other logical group.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one selected logical group corresponds to a plurality of selected logical groups, and the display includes only active connections within the plurality of selected logical groups.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the subset of the hierarchy is formed by identifying one or more connected logical groups, each connected logical group having at least one element that has an active connection to at least one element within the selected logical groups.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more connected logical groups are selected for display from among the connected logical groups having a same parent and at a same level of the hierarchy as the selected logical group.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more connected logical groups are selected for display from among the connected logical groups at a top level of the hierarchy.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium that includes a computer program that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

access a traffic database that provides traffic information,

access a network database that provides a description of hierarchy of a network organized by logical groups, and

display a subset of the hierarchy based on at least one selected logical group,

wherein:

elements within the selected logical group are displayed within a representation of the selected logical group,

connections between the elements within the selected logical group are displayed as lines between connected elements, and

connections between elements within the selected logical group and elements of an other logical group are displayed as one or more lines to a representation of the other logical group and are displayed based on the traffic information.

17. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to display the connections between elements within the selected logical group and elements of the other logical group as a single connecting line from each connecting element and the representation of the other logical group.

18. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the at least one selected logical group corresponds to a plurality of selected logical groups, and the program causes the processor to only display connections within the plurality of selected logical groups.

19. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to form the subset of the hierarchy by identifying one or more connected logical groups based on the traffic information, each connected logical group having at least one element that has communicated with at least one element within the selected logical groups.

20. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to select the one or more connected logical groups for display from among the connected logical groups having a same parent and at a same level of the hierarchy as the selected logical group.

21. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to select the one or more connected logical groups for display from among the connected logical groups at a top level of the hierarchy.

22. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to display one or more traffic statistics associated with one or more of the connections based on the traffic information.

23. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to display the connections between elements within the selected logical group and elements of the other logical group as a single connecting line between the representation of the selected logical group and the representation of the other logical group.

24. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the program causes the processor to display the one or more lines to the representation of the other logical group only if the traffic information indicates that there has been traffic between at least one element within the selected logical group and at least one element of the other logical group.

25. A Non-transitory computer-readable medium that includes a computer program that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

access a description of hierarchy of a network organized by logical groups,

retrieve traffic information associated with the network,

identify active connections associated with at least one selected logical group based on the traffic flow, and

a topology tool that is configured to display a subset of the hierarchy based on the active connections associated with the selected logical group.

26. The medium of claim 25 , wherein the computer program causes the processor to display one or more traffic statistics associated with one or more of the active connections based on the traffic information.

27. The medium of claim 25 , wherein the computer program causes the processor to display active connections between the elements within the selected logical group as lines between the elements, and to display multiple active connections from elements within the selected logical group to elements of an other logical group as a single connecting line between the selected logical group and the other logical group.

28. The medium of claim 25 , wherein the computer program causes the processor to display active connections between the elements of the selected logical group and the elements of the other logical group as a single connecting line from each of the elements of the selected logical group to the other logical group.
