Abstract

The invention provides a system and method for percutaneous energy delivery in an effective, manner using one or more probes. Additional variations of the system include array of probes configured to minimize the energy required to produce the desired effect.

Claims (32)

1. A method of cosmetically improving an appearance of skin by creating a controlled lesion in a region of dermal tissue adjacent to the skin, the region of dermal tissue having a set of electrical parameters comprising a first set of parameter values, the method comprising:

applying a substance to the region of skin and the tissue, where application of the substance causes variance of at least one of the set of electrical parameters resulting at least a second set of parameter values;

inserting at least one energy transfer unit through an epidermal layer of the skin where the energy transfer unit is electrically coupleable to an energy source and a controller; and

controlling application of energy from the energy transfer unit to the region of dermal tissue in a manner to maintain the region at a treatment temperature for a treatment time to limit a volume of the lesion in the dermal tissue, where the controller maintains the treatment temperature independently of the of the variance between the first and second set of parameter values.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring the set of electrical parameters with the energy transfer unit to confirm placement of the energy transfer unit in at least a portion of the region of dermal tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , where the substance comprises an anesthetic.

4. The method of claim 3 , where the anesthetic comprises lidocaine.

5. The method of claim 3 , where the lidocaine concentration in the anesthetic is between 0.1% to 2%.

6. The method of claim 3 , where the anesthetic comprises epinephrine.

7. The method of claim 1 , where the substance comprises a conductive fluid.

8. The method of claim 1 , where inserting the at least one energy transfer unit through the epidermal layer occurs prior to applying the substance to the region of skin.

9. The method of claim 8 , where measuring the set of electrical parameters with the energy transfer unit to confirm placement further comprises obtaining measured electrical parameters and using the measured electrical parameters to set the controller.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the skin comprises a region selected from the group consisting of a lower portion of the face, a perioral area, a periocular area, a neck region, a submental area.

11. The method of claim 1 , where the volume comprises a volume between 2mm 3 and 10 mm 3 .

12. The method of claim 1 , where the controller is a PID controller.

13. A method of cosmetically improving an appearance of skin by creating a plurality of controlled lesions in a region of dermal tissue adjacent to the skin, the region of dermal tissue having a set of electrical parameters comprising a first set of parameter values, the method comprising:

applying a substance to the region of skin and the tissue, where application of the substance causes variance of at least one of the set of electrical parameters resulting at least a second set of parameter values;

inserting at least two isolated energy transfer units through an epidermal layer of the skin where the energy transfer units are electrically coupleable to respective isolated energy sources and isolated controllers; and

controlling application of energy from each energy transfer unit to the region of dermal tissue in a manner to maintain the respective region at a treatment temperature for a treatment time to limit a volume of each of the plurality of lesions in the dermal tissue and to limit an overlapping region of the lesions, where the controller maintains the treatment temperature independently of the variance between the first and second set of parameter values.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising measuring the first and second set of electrical parameters with each of a first and second energy transfer units to confirm placement of the energy transfer units in at least a portion of the region of dermal tissue.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of lesions comprise a first and a second fractional lesions, and where limiting an overlapping region of the lesion comprises preventing the first and second fractional lesions from intersecting.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of lesions comprise a first and a second fractional lesions, and where limiting an overlapping region of the lesion comprises allowing the first and second fractional lesions to form an intersected volume.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the intersected volume is less than 50% of the volume of the first or second fractional lesion.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the volume of each of the fractional lesions is between 2 mm 3 and 10 mm 3 .

19. The method of claim 13 , where the substance comprises an anesthetic.

20. The method of claim 13 , where the anesthetic comprises lidocaine.

21. The method of claim 13 , where the lidocaine concentration in the anesthetic is between 0.1% to 2%.

22. The method of claim 13 , where the anesthetic comprises epinephrine.

23. The method of claim 13 , where the substance comprises a conductive fluid.

24. The method of claim 13 , where inserting the at least two energy transfer unit through the epidermal layer occurs prior to applying the substance to the region of skin.

25. The method of claim 24 , where measuring the set of electrical parameters with the energy transfer unit to confirm placement further comprises obtaining measured electrical parameters and using the measured electrical parameters to set the controller.

26. The method of claim 13 , wherein the skin comprises a region selected from the group consisting of a lower portion of the face, a perioral area, a periocular area, a neck region, a submental area.
