Abstract

A remote battery-operated device operates in accordance with a first set of operating parameters. During operation, power consumption information is generated and transmitted via a data network to a remote location for later use. In one embodiment, the remote location transmits one or more modified parameters back to the battery-operated device which control subsequent operation of the device. In this manner, power consumption within the device may be controlled to achieve a predetermined or desired operating lifetime.

Claims (97)

1. A method for controlling power consumption in a battery-operated device comprising a battery, a processor and memory, the method comprising:

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with a set of operating parameters;

monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data;

sending the generated power consumption data to a remote location;

receiving at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory;

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter, including determining a location of the battery-operated device and transmitting the determined location over a data network to a remote location.

2. The method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the power consumption data comprises at least a one of a number of times an event has occurred during a predetermined time period and an amount of time spent performing an event during a predetermined time period.

3. The method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the power consumption data comprises:

first power consumption data generated in response to a first event occurring one or more times during a predetermined time period;

second power consumption data generated in response to a second event occurring one or more times during the predetermined time period; and

third power consumption data generated in response to a third event occurring one or more times during the predetermined time period.

4. The method in accordance with claim 1 wherein transmitting the determined location comprises wireless transmitting.

5. The method in accordance with claim 1 wherein monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data further comprises:

implementing a state machine process that monitors device operation, the state machine process represented by a state diagram having a plurality of states, and wherein each state is associated with a predetermined function performed by the device.

6. The method in accordance with claim 5 wherein the plurality of states includes an IDLE state, a GPS FIX state and a DATA TRANSFER state.

7. The method in accordance with claim 1 wherein monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data further comprises:

counting a number of times a first event is performed;

measuring an amount of time spent performing the first event;

counting a number of times a second event is performed; and

measuring an amount of time spent performing the second event.

8. A battery-operated device comprising:

a battery for supplying power to the device;

memory operable for storing a set of operating parameters;

a processor configured to:

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the set of operating parameters,

monitor operation of the battery-operated device and generate power consumption data,

send the generated power consumption data to a remote location,

receive at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory, and

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter;

a location determining device operable for determining a location of the battery-operated device; and

a communications module operable for transmitting the determined location over a data network to a remote location.

9. The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the power consumption data comprises at least a one of a number of times an event has occurred during a predetermined time period and an amount of time spent performing an event during a predetermined time period.

10. The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the power consumption data comprises:

first power consumption data generated in response to a first event occurring one or more times during a predetermined time period;

second power consumption data generated in response to a second event occurring one or more times during the predetermined time period; and

third power consumption data generated in response to a third event occurring one or more times during the predetermined time period.

11. The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the communications module is operable for transmitting wirelessly.

The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the processor is further operable for implementing a state machine process that monitors device operation, the state machine process represented by a state diagram having a plurality of states, and wherein each state is associated with a predetermined function performed by the device.

13. The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 12 wherein the plurality of states includes an IDLE state, a GPS FIX state and a DATA TRANSFER state.

14. The battery-operated device in accordance with claim 8 further comprising:

a counter operable for counting a number of times a first event occurs;

a first time measuring device operable for measuring an amount of time spent performing the first event;

a second counter operable for counting a number of times a second event occurs; and

a second time measuring device operable for measuring an amount of time spent performing the second event.

15. A global position system (GPS) tracking device comprising:

a battery for supplying power to the device;

memory configured to store a set of operating parameters;

a GPS module configured and operable for receiving communication signals from one or more GPS satellites and calculating location information of the device;

a network communications module configured to transmit and receive communications between a data network and the device;

a processor operable for:

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with the set of operating parameters,

monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data,

sending, via the network communications module, the generated power consumption data to a remote location,

sending, via the network communications module, the location information to a remote location,

receiving at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location receiving the power consumption data and storing in the memory, and

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter.

16. The global position system (GPS) tracking device in accordance with claim 15 wherein operation of the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter reduces power consumption in the device.

The global position system (GPS) tracking device in accordance with claim 15 wherein the processor is further operable for implementing a state machine process that monitors device operation, the state machine process represented by a state diagram having a plurality of states, and wherein each state is associated with a predetermined function performed by the device.

The global position system (GPS) tracking device in accordance with claim 15 wherein the battery has a first battery life when the device operates in accordance with the set of operating parameters and the battery has a second battery life greater than the first battery life when the device operates in accordance with the received at least one modified operating parameter.

19. A method for controlling power consumption in a battery-operated device comprising a battery, a processor and memory, the method comprising:

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with a set of operating parameters;

monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data, the monitoring operation and generating comprising implementing a state machine process that monitors device operation, the state machine process represented by a state diagram having a plurality of states, and wherein each state is associated with a predetermined function performed by the device, and the plurality of states includes an IDLE state, a GPS FIX state and a DATA TRANSFER state;

sending the generated power consumption data to a remote location;

receiving at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory; and

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter.

20. A method for controlling power consumption in a battery-operated device comprising a battery, a processor and memory, the method comprising:

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with a set of operating parameters;

monitoring operation of the battery-operated device and generating power consumption data, the monitoring comprising:

counting a number of times a first event is performed,

measuring an amount of time spent performing the first event,

counting a number of times a second event is performed, and

measuring an amount of time spent performing the second event;

sending the generated power consumption data to a remote location;

receiving at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory; and

operating the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter.

21. A battery-operated device comprising:

a battery for supplying power to the device;

memory operable for storing a set of operating parameters; and

a processor configured to:

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the set of operating parameters,

monitor operation of the battery-operated device and generate power consumption data, including implement a state machine process that monitors device operation, the state machine process represented by a state diagram having a plurality of states, and wherein each state is associated with a predetermined function performed by the device, and the plurality of states includes an IDLE state, a GPS FIX state and a DATA TRANSFER state,

send the generated power consumption data to a remote location,

receive at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory, and

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter.

22. A battery-operated device comprising:

a battery for supplying power to the device;

memory operable for storing a set of operating parameters;

a processor configured to:

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the set of operating parameters,

monitor operation of the battery-operated device and generate power consumption data,

send the generated power consumption data to a remote location,

receive at least one modified operating parameter from the remote location and storing in the memory, and

operate the battery-operated device in accordance with the at least one modified operating parameter;

a counter operable for counting a number of times a first event occurs;

a first time measuring device operable for measuring an amount of time spent performing the first event;

a second counter operable for counting a number of times a second event occurs; and

a second time measuring device operable for measuring an amount of time spent performing the second event.
