Abstract

Techniques for applying electromagnetic energy to deep, targeted areas without overwhelming other areas are provided. One or more coils are moved relative to a target area and magnetic fields are applied to the target from multiple coil locations. As a result, the aggregate electromagetic energy applied to the target over time is greater than surrounding areas. Additionally, a model for testing and treatment planning is provided.

Claims (24)

1. A method of applying electromagnetic energy from a plurality of positions around a subject's head to stimulate a target deep brain region without over-stimulating superficial cortical brain regions, the method comprising:

positioning a plurality of electromagnetic coils about the subject's head;

applying a first pulse to at least one of the electromagnetic coils from a first location outside of the subject's head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head for a first period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the first pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region;

applying a second pulse to at least one of the electromagnetic coils from a second location outside of the subject's head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head for a second period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the second pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region, further wherein a beginning of the second period of time is temporally separated from an end of the first period of time by an interval such that magnetic field energy from the first pulse and magnetic field energy from the second pulse stimulate neurons in the target deep brain region.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the position of the plurality of electromagnetic coils relative to the subject's head.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning comprises moving the plurality of electromagnetic coils relative to the subject's head.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning comprises rotating the plurality of electromagnetic coils about the subject's head.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying a train of pulses; and wherein applying a second pulse comprises applying a train of pulses.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying current from a TMS generator to the least one of the electromagnetic coils.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying a first train of pulses; and wherein applying a second pulse comprises applying a second train of pulses after applying the first train of pulses.

8. A method of applying electromagnetic energy from a plurality of positions around a subject's head to stimulate a target deep brain region without over-stimulating superficial cortical brain regions, the method comprising:

applying a first pulse to a first electromagnetic coil from a first location outside of the subject's head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head for a first period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the first pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region;

applying a second pulse to a second electromagnetic coil from a second location outside of the subject's head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head for a second period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the second pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region,

further wherein a beginning of the second period of time is temporally separated from an end of the first period of time by an interval such that magnetic field energy emitted by the first and second electromagnetic coils is added to stimulate neurons in the target deep brain region.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising positioning a plurality of electromagnetic coils comprising the first and second coil about the subject's head.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising moving the first and second electromagnetic coils relative to the subject's head.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising rotating the first and second electromagnetic coils about the subject's head.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying a train of pulses; and wherein applying a second pulse comprises applying a train of pulses.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying current from a TMS generator to the first electromagnetic coil.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying a first pulse comprises applying a first train of pulses; and wherein applying a second pulse comprises applying a second train of pulses after applying the first train of pulses.

15. A method of applying electromagnetic energy from a plurality of positions around a subject's head to stimulate a target deep brain region without over-stimulating superficial cortical brain regions, the method comprising:

positioning a plurality of electromagnetic coils about the subject's head;

applying a first train of pulses to at least one of the electromagnetic coils to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head from a first location outside of the subject's head, wherein the magnetic field energy from the first train of pulses is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region;

applying a second train of pulses to at least one of the electromagnetic coils to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject's head from a second location outside of the subject's head, wherein the magnetic field energy from the second train of pulses is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region, further wherein the second train of pulses is temporally separated from the first train of pulses by an interval after applying the first train of pulses such that stimulation from the magnetic field energy at the target deep brain region from the first and second train of pulses is added to stimulate neurons in the target deep brain region.
