Abstract

An improved illuminator ( 103 ) for producing broadband light and delivering said light to a target ( 125 ) for measuring the color of the target which incorporates an integrated system comprising a solid-state white LED source ( 105 ) to illuminate the target with continuous, broadband illuminating light ( 114 ). After interaction with the sample, returning light ( 107 ) is either collected by a detector or a light collector such as fiber ( 141 ), or processed and analyzed by an analysis system such as color monitor ( 267 ), or both, creating a real-time integrated color sensor device or system that enables color detection, monitoring, identification, or analysis. A solid-state illuminator integrated with a color detector advantageously allows for a more compact, reduced heat producing, and more energy efficient manufacturable device, and further facilitates integration of the illuminator and detector into a microchip or lab-on-chip device or system. Methods of use are also disclosed.

Claims (23)

- 19 . (canceled)

. A device having an integrated solid state illuminator and detector sensor for color measurement comprising:

at least one broadband solid-state light source for emitting light, said source having a having a usable spectral bandwidth of at least 100 nm; and,

at least one light detector for generating a measurable signal in response to a detected portion of emitted light returning to said detector, said light source integrated with said detector, wherein said signal is a function of color.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the signal is selected from the list of signals comprising a color detection, a color spectrum, a color identification, or other signals related to color.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the signal is one or more detected, identified, or analyzed colors, including one or more of violet, blue, green, orange, and/or red, or other colors.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the broadband solid state light source comprises at least one LED.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the broadband solid state light source is a white LED.

. The device of claim 24 wherein the white LED comprises a blue LED and a phosphor.

. The device of claim 23 wherein the broadband light source is comprised of multiple LEDs to produce a continuous, broadband spectrum of light.

. The device of claim 26 wherein each of the multiple LEDs operates in at least one wavelength band.

. The device of claim 23 wherein the broadband LED comprises an LED and a fluorescent dye.

. The device of claim 23 wherein the broadband LED comprises an LED and one or more quantum dots.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the illuminator operates to produce at least a portion of its light in the infrared spectrum.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the illuminator operates to produce at least a portion of its light in the ultraviolet spectrum.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the device is further incorporated into an integrated device, integrated microchip, lab-on-chip, monitor, or system.

. The device of claim 20 wherein the device is incorporated into a system selected from the list of devices or systems consisting of spectrophotometers, microdevices, microchip, lab-on-a-chip, or other small optical device with space and size constraints, disposable optical devices, and other optical spectroscopy devices and systems.

. An illuminator detector for monitoring color, wherein illumination of a sample is achieved using an integrated broadband solid-state light source, and color monitoring is performed using an integrated light detector sensor, said detector arranged so as to detect light from the light source returning after interaction with said sample.

. The illuminator detector of claim 34 wherein the broadband source is a white LED.

. A method of manufacturing an illuminator integrated with a light detector for detecting color, wherein illumination of a sample is achieved using a broadband LED.

. The method of claim 36 wherein the broadband LED is a white LED.

. An illuminator for detecting color comprising one or more broadband solid-state light sources for illuminating a target, and one or more light detectors for generating a signal related to the color of the target in response to the light returning after interaction with the target, said light source and detectors integrated into a single device or system.

. The illuminator of claim 34 , further comprising a target signal, where said target signal is enhanced, produced, or detected, at least in part, by one or more of the following: light absorbance, polarization, optical rotation, scattering, fluorescence, Raman effects, phosphorescence, fluorescence decay, re-emission, use of a contrast agent, dye shift, or other spectroscopy techniques.
