Abstract

An EPG displays programming information in a variety of ways including using 3-D images, alphanumeric text, and video data. A presentation engine allows viewers and/or programmers to select between varying programming worlds. In addition, non-EPG objects, such as interaction objects, may be conflated with the presentation of the world and with the program schedule information.

Claims (46)

1. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

memory operatively coupled to the processor and storing computer readable instructions that, when executed, cause the system to:

receive a selection of content;

select, based on the received selection of content, a virtual world of a plurality of virtual worlds; and

generate an electronic programming guide (EPG) incorporating the selected virtual world,

wherein layout features of at least one of the plurality of virtual worlds are defined by a first class of objects,

wherein schedule information associated with the EPG is defined in a pseudo-descriptive language included in at least one object of a second class of objects,

wherein each object of the second class of objects includes a channel identification and a title of a corresponding programming event, and

wherein generating the EPG includes combining selected objects from each of the first and second classes of objects to present the EPG incorporating the selected virtual world.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein one or more interaction objects is defined by a third class of objects.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each object of the second class of objects further includes a start time of the corresponding programming event or a run length of the corresponding programming event.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the schedule information defined in the pseudo-descriptive language includes a permissive choice of advertisements.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein an entire world description of one of the plurality of virtual worlds is defined by one or more objects.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein a second virtual world, different from the selected virtual world, is selectable by a viewer.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the memory resides in a set-top box or in a television.

8. The system of claim h wherein the second class of objects includes localized aspects.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a selection of content;

selecting, by the computing device, based on the received selection of content, a virtual world of a plurality of virtual worlds; and

generating, by the computing device, an electronic programming guide (EPG) based on the selected virtual world,

wherein layout features of at least one of the plurality of virtual worlds are defined by a first class of objects,

wherein schedule information associated with the EPG is defined in a pseudo-descriptive language in at least one object of a second class of objects,

wherein each object of the second class of objects includes a channel identification and a title of a corresponding programming event, and

wherein generating the EPG includes combining selected objects from each of the first and second classes of objects to present the EPG incorporating the selected virtual world.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

selecting, by the computing device, for inclusion in the EPG at least one object from a third class of objects, the third class of objects defining one or more interaction objects.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein each object of the second class of objects includes at least one of a start time and a run length of the corresponding programming event.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the schedule information defined in the pseudo-descriptive language includes a permissive choice of advertisements.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein an entire world description of one of the plurality of virtual worlds is defined by one or more objects of the first class of objects.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the computing device is a set-top box or a television.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the interaction objects correspond to displayable and interactive electronic commerce objects.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein each of the one or more virtual worlds correspond to a different visual theme comprising one or more images.

17. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

re-generating, by the computing device, the EPG based on a second virtual world different from the selected virtual world, the second virtual world being selected by a viewer.

18. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to:

receive a selection of content;

select, based on the received selection of content, a virtual world of a plurality of virtual worlds; and

generate an electronic programming guide (EPG) based on the selected virtual world,

wherein layout features of at least one of the plurality of virtual worlds are defined by a first class of objects,

wherein schedule information associated with the EPG is defined in a pseudo-descriptive language in at least one object of a second class of objects,

wherein each object of the second class of objects includes a channel identification and a title of a corresponding programming event, and

wherein generating the EPG includes combining selected objects from each of the first and second classes of objects to present the EPG incorporating the selected virtual world.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the schedule information defined in the pseudo-descriptive language further includes a start time of the corresponding programming event and a run length of the corresponding programming event.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , having additional instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause the computing device to:

re-generate the EPG based on a second virtual world different from the selected virtual world, the second virtual world being selected by a viewer.
