Abstract

An intravascular device can comprise a carrier and an expansion apparatus. The device can be used for intravascular treatment of atherosclerotic plaque. The carrier can be reversibly expandable and collapsible within a vessel and can have ribbon strips extending between opposite ends in a longitudinal direction of the carrier. The ribbon strips can each be formed with a plurality of elongated protrusions thereon. The expansion apparatus can be used to actuate the ribbon strips each with the plurality elongated protrusions to pierce a luminal surface of the plaque with lines or patterns of microperforations which act as serrations for forming cleavage lines or planes in the plaque.

Claims (20)

1. An intravascular device for perforation and serration of atherosclerotic plaque within a vessel comprising:

a carrier being reversibly expandable and collapsible within the vessel,

said carrier comprises a metal sheet formed in a tubular shape and having ribbon strips extending between opposite ends of the sheet in a longitudinal direction of the carrier,

said ribbon strips each being formed with a plurality of elongated protrusions thereon, each of the protrusions attached to the ribbon strip at a base, a height of the protrusion defined by a distance extending from the base to a top edge, the top edge being elongate and extending essentially in a line that defines the top most portion of the protrusion,

each ribbon strips separated from adjacent ribbon strips by a single slit on either side which is oriented in the longitudinal direction and extends up to but not including one or both opposite ends of the tubular shape of metal sheet, said ribbon strips being unconnected between said opposite ends of the tubular shape of metal sheet thereby being left free to expand into and form longitudinal cleavage lines or planes in the plaque; and

an expansion apparatus for actuating the ribbon strips each with the plurality elongated protrusions to pierce a luminal surface of the plaque with lines or patterns of microperforations which act as serrations for forming cleavage lines or planes in the plaque.

2. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the expansion apparatus is selected from the group consisting of: a mechanical apparatus, an expansion balloon, and a balloon-assisted deployment.

3. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusions are formed like polymer gum drops on the ribbon strip.

4. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon strips are a shape memory material that is biased outwardly toward the arterial wall.

5. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusions are carried on buttons used to attach them to the ribbon strips.

6. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon strips are joined together on one end of the metal sheet.

7. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon strips are joined together on alternating opposite ends of the metal sheet.

8. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon strips are joined together on both opposite ends of the metal sheet.

9. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon strips are formed of metal configured to be spring-biased radially away from a longitudinal axis of the carrier.

10. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one of strings, cables and wire elements, wherein each ribbon strip has a series of holes formed in the length thereof, the holes serving as points for attachment of one of the strings, cables and wire elements to provide additional support when the ribbon strips are expanded outward toward the blood vessel walls.

11. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one of strings, cables and wire elements, wherein each ribbon strip comprises a hole at an end opposite where the ribbon strips are joined together, the holes configured to couple with one of the strings, cables and wire elements to provide additional support when the ribbon strips are expanded outward toward the blood vessel walls.

12. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein a length of the top edge corresponds with a length of the base.

13. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the height of the protrusion is less than a length of the top edge.

14. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the height of the protrusion is less than a space between adjacent protrusions on the same ribbon strip.

15. An intravascular device according to claim 1 , wherein the metal sheet formed in a tubular shape comprises a bent metal sheet welded into a tube or the strips are cut out of a tube leaving one or more ends intact.
