Abstract

An end effector of an ultrasonic surgical instrument is provided, the ultrasonic surgical instrument having a manipulatable structure, a body portion operatively connected to the manipulatable structure and having a distal end, a transducer, and the end effector being supported on the distal end of the body portion, the end effector including a plurality of resonant member elements, each resonant member operatively connected to a transducer of the plurality of transducers for effecting vibrations along the length of the resonant member, and including an operating surface configured to effect tissue dissection, cutting, coagulation, ligation and/or hemostasis, wherein a displacement curve associated with the vibrations of a first one of the plurality of resonant members is offset relative to the displacement curve associated with the vibrations of a second one of the plurality of resonant members.

Claims (21)

1. An end effector for an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:

a first resonant member having a body portion and an operating surface extending distally therefrom;

a second resonant member having a body portion and an operating surface extending distally therefrom;

a first transducer directly connected to the first resonant member, the first transducer configured for effecting vibrations along the operating surface of the first resonant member; and

a second transducer directly connected to the second resonant member, the second transducer configured for effecting vibrations along the operating surface of the second resonant member,

wherein the first resonant member and the second resonant member are laminated together and are staggered longitudinally relative to one another such that a distal end of the first resonant member and a distal end of the second resonant member are longitudinally spaced apart from one another so that a displacement curve associated with the vibrations of the first resonant member is offset relative to the displacement curve associated with the vibrations of the second resonant member.

2. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the vibrations are longitudinal.

3. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the vibrations are transverse.

4. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the lamination defines a flexible bond for bonding the first resonant member and the second resonant member.

5. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the lamination of the first and second resonant member is a multilayer laminate.

6. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the first transducer is staggered longitudinally relative to the second transducer.

7. The end effector according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second transducers are located on the body portions of the respective first and second resonant members.

8. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the first resonant member end and a distal end of the second resonant member define a distance.

9. The end effector of claim 8 , wherein the distance is substantially constant.

10. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the lamination of the first and second resonant members includes a flexible material that allows relative movement between the two resonant members.

11. The end effector of claim 10 , wherein the relative movement is on the order of microns.

12. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first resonant member defines a first surface area, and the second resonant member defines a second surface area.

13. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein a portion of the first surface area abuts a portion of the second surface area.

14. The end effector of claim 13 , wherein the first and second resonant members are laminated together such that the portion of the first surface area and the portion of the second surface area have bonding material applied thereto.

15. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first resonant member and the second resonant member have different lengths.

16. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first and second transducers are disposed on the body portions of the respective first and second resonant members.
