Abstract

Methods of fabricating an energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) head to compensate for a heat-induced protrusion of a near field transducer formed therein are disclosed. The methods can include applying optical power to the near field transducer to generate heat therein. The near field transducer protrudes beyond an air bearing surface of the EAMR head by the generated heat. The methods can further include removing a protruded portion of the near field transducer.

Claims (15)

1. A method of fabricating an energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) head to compensate for a heat-induced protrusion of a near field transducer formed therein, the method comprising:

applying optical power to the near field transducer to generate heat therein, whereby the near field transducer protrudes beyond an air hearing surface of the EAMR head; and

removing a protruded portion of the near field transducer,

wherein applying the optical power comprises coupling light into a waveguide formed in the EAMR head and directing the coupled light to the near field transducer via the waveguide.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the near field transducer is disposed in a slider, and the applied optical power also generates heat in a portion of the slider surrounding the near field transducer, whereby the surrounding slider portion protrudes above the air bearing surface, and further comprising removing a protruded portion of the surrounding slider portion.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the optical power comprises applying laser light to the near field transducer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying optical power to the near field transducer and removing the protruded portion thereof are iteratively repeated.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein greater level of optical power is applied to the near field transducer in each iteration.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the greater level of optical power in each iteration causes a further portion of the near field transducer to protrude.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a level of optical power applied to the near field transducer in a final iteration is an operational level of optical power for use during a recording operation of the EAMR head.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying optical power to the near field transducer and removing the protruded portion thereof occur concurrently.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the optical power applied to the near field transducer is gradually increased while removing a protruded portion of the near field transducer.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the optical power applied to the near field transducer is increased to an operational level of optical power for use during a recording operation of the EAMR head.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the protruded portion is removed via a lapping operation.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the lapping operation comprises chemical-mechanical polishing.
