Multipotent adult stem cells and methods for isolation
View Patent ↗The invention provides isolated stem cells of non-embryonic origin that can be maintained in culture in the undifferentiated state or differentiated to form cells of multiple tissue types. Also provided are methods of isolation and culture, as well as therapeutic uses for the isolated cells.
1. A cell culture comprising isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells that are obtained by culture of non-embryonic, non-germ tissue, the cells having undergone 40 cell doublings in culture, wherein the cells have a normal karyotype.
2. The cell culture of claim 1 wherein the non-embryonic, non-germ cells express one or more of oct4, telomerase, rex-1, rox-1, or sox-2.
3. The cell culture of claim 1 wherein the non-embryonic, non-germ cells can differentiate into at least one cell type of at least two of the endodermal, ectodermal, and mesodermal embryonic lineages.
4. The cell culture of claim 3 wherein the non-embryonic, non-germ cells express one or more of oct4, telomerase, rex-1, rox-1, or sox-2.
5. The cell culture of claim 3 wherein the non-embryonic, non-germ cells can differentiate into at least one cell type of each of the endodermal, ectodermal, and mesodermal embryonic lineages.
6. The cell culture of claim 5 wherein the non-embryonic, non-germ cells express one or more of oct4, telomerase, rex-1, rox-1, or sox-2.
7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising the isolated expanded non-embryonic, non-germ cells of claim 1 in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
8. A method for making the pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 comprising admixing the isolated expanded non-embryonic, non-germ cells with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
9. A method for making a cell culture composition, said method comprising introducing the isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells of claim 1 into cell culture medium.
10. The cell culture of any of claim 1 - 6 wherein the isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells are derived from bone marrow.
11. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 wherein the isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells are derived from bone marrow.
12. The method of claim 8 wherein the isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells are derived from bone marrow.
13. The method of claim 9 wherein the isolated expanded human non-embryonic, non-germ cells are derived from bone marrow.
