Abstract

The apparatus and methods of the present invention in a broad aspect provide novel visualization platforms for performing enhanced visually directed procedures on target objects or tissues under low ambient light conditions. The visualization platforms can be included with or retro-fit to existing optical systems such as stereomicroscopes and include at least one high resolution photosensor capable of acquiring a plurality of optical views of the target object or tissue in at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of normal visible light. A resultant real-time high resolution video signal is transmitted from the photosensor to at least one high resolution video display that can be viewed by the apparatus or process operator.

Claims (34)

1. A visualization platform for enhancing visual control to perform a visually directed eye procedure on a target object under low ambient visible light, said visualization platform comprising:

at least one high resolution photosensor configured to:

(a) acquire a plurality of optical views corresponding to at least one left view and at least one right view of a stereoscopic image of said target object in at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of visible light between about 700 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers;

(b) convert at least a portion of the plurality of the optical views corresponding to the at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of visible light into at least one real-time high resolution video signal; and

(c) transmit the at least one real-time high resolution video signal;

a processor configured to process the at least one real-time high resolution video signal so that the at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of visible light is converted into at least one wavelength of visible light; and

at least one high resolution video display receiving the at least one processed real-time high resolution video signal, wherein the portion of the plurality of the optical views corresponding to the at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of visible light is displayed in the at least one wavelength of visible light,

wherein the target object includes an eye comprising a pupil at a natural maximum pupillary diameter, and

wherein the at least one high resolution photosensor performs (a) to (c) after an intensity of the low ambient visible light is low enough such that the pupil of the eye does not constrict substantially from the natural maximum pupillary diameter.

2. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said high resolution is high definition.

3. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said photosensor is a camera.

4. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of normal visible light is between about 750 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers or less than 400 nm.

5. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said at least one wavelength outside of the wavelengths of normal visible light is between about 750 nanometers and about 1 micrometer.

6. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein the at east one real-time high resolution video signal is at least one digital video signal.

7. The visualization platform of claim 6 , wherein the at least one digital video signal is capable of producing an image having a resolution of at least about 1280 lines by 720 lines.

8. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said video display is a three dimensional video display.

9. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said visually directed eye procedure is laser surgery.

10. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein said visually directed eye procedure is laser assisted in situ keratomileusis.

11. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein the at least one high resolution photosensor performs (a) to (c) while the visually directed eye procedure is being performed with the intensity of the low ambient visible light being insufficient to cause the pupil of the eye to constrict substantially from the natural maximum pupillary diameter during the eye surgical procedure.

12. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein the target object includes tissue that is susceptible to at least one of damage and change from exposure to visible light and the intensity of the low ambient visible light is insufficient to cause the at least one of damage and change to the tissue.

13. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein visible light from the display is prevented from illuminating the target object.

14. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein the intensity of the low ambient visible light is essentially eliminated.

15. The visualization platform of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processed real-time high resolution video signal enables the target Object to he manipulated when the intensity of the low ambient visible light is essentially eliminated.

16. A visualization platform for enhancing visual control to perform a visually directed laser assisted in situ keratomileusis procedure on an eye under low ambient visible light, said visualization platform comprising:

at least one high definition camera configured to:

(a) acquire a plurality of optical views corresponding to at least one left view and at least one right view of a stereoscopic image of said eye in wavelengths of between about 750 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers;

(b) convert at least a portion of the plurality of the optical views corresponding to the wavelengths of between 750 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers into at least one real-time high resolution video signal; and

(c) transmit the at least one real-time high resolution video signal;

a processor configured to process in real time the at least one real-time high resolution video signal so that the wavelengths of between 750 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers are converted into at least one wavelength of visible light; and

at least one high resolution three dimensional video display receiving the at least one processed real-time high resolution video signal, wherein the portion of the plurality of the optical views corresponding to the wavelengths of between 750 nanometers and about 1400 nanometers is displayed in the at least one wavelength of visible light in real time,

wherein the eye includes tissue that is susceptible to at least one of damage and change from exposure to visible light, and

wherein the at least one high definition camera performs (a) to (c) after an intensity of the low ambient visible light is low enough such that the tissue does not change or become damaged.

17. The visualization platform of claim 16 , wherein the intensity of the low ambient visible light is insufficient to cause a pupil of the eye to constrict substantially from its natural maximum pupillary diameter.

18. The visualization platform of claim 16 , wherein visible light from the display is prevented from illuminating the target object.
