Abstract

Methods of power injecting a fluid through an access port are described. One method includes implanting in a patient an access port suitable for passing fluid therethrough at a rate of at least about 1 milliliter per second, the access port including a body defining a cavity, a septum, and an outlet in fluid communication with the cavity, and flowing a fluid through an infusion set into the access port at a rate of at least about 1 milliliter per second, the infusion set including a needle in fluid communication with a tubing, the tubing in fluid communication with a connector, each of the needle, tubing, and connector constructed to have a burst pressure of at least about 100 psi.

Claims (24)

1. A method of power injecting a fluid through an access port, comprising:

implanting in a patient an access port suitable for passing fluid therethrough at a rate of at least 1 milliliter per second, the access port including a body defining a cavity, a septum, and an outlet in fluid communication with the cavity, the body and septum structured for accommodating a pressure developed within the cavity of at least 35 psi;

providing an infusion set, comprising:

a non-coring needle having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi;

a polymer tubing in fluid communication with the needle, the tubing formed from a material substantially free of plasticizer, the tubing having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi; and

a connector having an inner surface affixed to an outer surface of the tubing, the connector formed from a material substantially free of plasticizer, the connector having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi; and

flowing a fluid through the infusion set into the access port at a rate of at least 1 milliliter per second.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of flowing fluid comprises injecting contrast media fluid through the tubing and needle to induce a pressure within the access port in the range of about 37 psi to about 65 psi.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the needle, tubing, and connector are constructed to have a burst pressure of at least about 400 psi.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the needle, tubing, and connector are constructed to have a burst pressure of at least about 600 psi.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the implanting step includes implanting an access port that is suitable for passing fluid therethrough at a rate of between about 2 milliliters per second and about 5 milliliters per second.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of flowing fluid comprises flowing fluid through the infusion set at a rate of at least 5 milliliters per second.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of limiting deformation of the septum in response to a pressure developed within the cavity by reinforcing the septum through inclusion of a structural element.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the step of limiting deformation comprises embedding the structural element in the septum.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the step of limiting deformation comprises non-peripherally coupling the septum to the housing.

10. A method of power injecting a fluid through an access port, comprising:

implanting in a patient an access port suitable for passing fluid therethrough at a rate of at least 1 milliliter per second, the access port including a body defining a cavity, a septum, and an outlet in fluid communication with the cavity, the body and septum structured for accommodating a pressure developed within the cavity of at least 35 psi;

providing an infusion set, comprising:

a non-coring needle having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi;

a polymer tubing in fluid communication with the needle, the tubing having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi; and

a connector having an inner surface affixed to an outer surface of the tubing, the connector having a burst pressure of at least 100 psi; and

flowing a fluid through the infusion set into the access port at a rate of at least 1 milliliter per second.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the connector is formed from a material substantially free of plasticizer.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the tubing is formed from a material substantially free of plasticizer.
