Abstract

A scroll compressor an orbiting scroll member including a second end plate, a second wrap extending from the second end plate and meshingly engaged with the first wrap to form a suction pocket in fluid communication with a suction pressure region of the compressor, intermediate compression pockets, and a discharge pocket in fluid communication with the discharge passage. An auxiliary passage is in fluid communication with one of the intermediate compression pockets to provide pressurized fluid to the chamber to deflect the first end plate and the first wrap axially toward the orbiting scroll member.

Claims (30)

1. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly;

a non-orbiting scroll member axially fixed relative to said shell assembly and including a first end plate, a first wrap extending from a first side of said first end plate, a discharge passage and an auxiliary passage, said first end plate and said shell assembly cooperating to define a chamber in fluid communication with said auxiliary passage; and

an orbiting scroll member including a second end plate, a second wrap extending from said second end plate and meshingly engaged with said first wrap to form a suction pocket in fluid communication with a suction pressure region of the compressor, intermediate compression pockets, and a discharge pocket in fluid communication with said discharge passage, said auxiliary passage being in fluid communication with one of said intermediate compression pockets to provide pressurized fluid to said chamber to deflect said first end plate and said first wrap axially toward said orbiting scroll member.

2. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said chamber is isolated from said discharge passage.

3. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the pressurized fluid within said chamber promotes engagement between said first wrap and said orbiting scroll member when said non-orbiting scroll member experiences thermal growth.

4. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said first wrap includes tips on a distal end and said pressurized fluid influences deflection of said non-orbiting scroll member to promote proximity of said tips to said second end plate.

5. The compressor of claim 1 , further comprising a discharge fitting in fluid communication with said discharge passage in said non-orbiting scroll member and extending through said shell assembly to isolate said chamber from said discharge passage.

6. The compressor of claim 5 , wherein said discharge fitting extends into said discharge passage.

7. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said non-orbiting scroll member is axially fixed relative to said shell assembly at an outer perimeter region thereof.

The compressor of claim 7 , further comprising a bearing housing and fasteners, said bearing housing axially fixed relative to said shell assembly and said fasteners extending axially through said outer perimeter region of said non-orbiting scroll member and fixing said non-orbiting scroll member to said bearing housing.

9. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said orbiting scroll member is axially displaceable relative to said non-orbiting scroll member.

The compressor of claim 9 , further comprising a bearing housing axially fixed relative to said shell assembly and supporting said orbiting scroll member thereon, said second end plate and said bearing housing defining a biasing chamber, said orbiting scroll member including a biasing passage extending through said second end plate and being in fluid communication with another one of said intermediate compression pockets to bias said orbiting scroll member axially toward said non-orbiting scroll member.

11. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly;

a non-orbiting scroll member including a first end plate axially fixed relative to said shell assembly and sealingly engaged with said shell assembly at an outer perimeter region thereof, a first wrap extending from a first side of said first end plate, a discharge passage and an auxiliary passage, a second side of said first end plate opposite said first side and said shell assembly cooperating to define a chamber in fluid communication with said auxiliary passage, said chamber being defined from said discharge passage radially outward to said outer perimeter region; and

an orbiting scroll member including a second end plate, a second wrap extending from said second end plate and meshingly engaged with said first wrap to form a suction pocket in fluid communication with a suction pressure region of the compressor, intermediate compression pockets, and a discharge pocket in fluid communication with said discharge passage, said auxiliary passage being in fluid communication with one of said intermediate compression pockets to provide pressurized fluid to said chamber to deflect said first end plate and said first wrap axially toward said orbiting scroll member.

12. The compressor of claim 11 , wherein said chamber is isolated from said discharge passage.

13. The compressor of claim 11 , wherein said second side of said first end plate is isolated from said suction pressure region.

14. The compressor of claim 11 , wherein said discharge passage is located centrally in said non-orbiting scroll member.

15. The compressor of claim 11 , wherein said first wrap includes tips on a distal end and said pressurized fluid influences deflection of said non-orbiting scroll member to promote proximity of said tips to said second end plate.

16. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly;

a non-orbiting scroll member axially fixed relative to said shell assembly and including a first end plate, a first wrap extending from a first side of said first end plate, a discharge passage and an auxiliary passage, said first end plate and said shell assembly cooperating to define a chamber in fluid communication with said auxiliary passage;

an orbiting scroll member including a second end plate, a second wrap extending from said second end plate and meshingly engaged with said first wrap to form a suction pocket in fluid communication with a suction pressure region of the compressor, intermediate compression pockets, and a discharge pocket in fluid communication with said discharge passage, said auxiliary passage being in fluid communication with one of said intermediate compression pockets to provide pressurized fluid to said chamber to deflect said first end plate and said first wrap axially toward said orbiting scroll member; and

a discharge fitting extending into said discharge passage in said non-orbiting scroll member and extending through said shell assembly to isolate said chamber from said discharge passage.

17. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein said non-orbiting scroll member is axially fixed relative to said shell assembly at an outer perimeter region thereof.

18. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein said non-orbiting scroll member includes a second side opposite said first side of said first end plate, said second side being isolated from said suction pressure region.

19. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein said discharge passage is located centrally in said non-orbiting scroll member.

20. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein said first wrap includes tips on a distal end and said pressurized fluid influences deflection of said non-orbiting scroll member to promote proximity of said tips to said second end plate.
