Abstract

A camera module for a compact printer system. The camera module includes a CMOS image sensor that captures an RGB image when a take button is actuated. The RGB image is transformed to a suitable format, such as L*a*b*, for transfer directly to a printer module. The camera module incorporates a camera portion pivotally connected to a base portion, where by the camera portion is pivotal between a first position where it is aligned with on a common axis on the base portion and a second position where there is no alignment. The base portion has a connector that connects directly to a corresponding connector on the printer module, providing both a physical connection and a logical connection. The logical connection is a serial bus that communicates power and data.

Claims (10)

1. A printer system comprising:

a cylindrically shaped printer module for printing image data, the printer module having a pagewidth inkjet printhead and a power source; and

a cylindrically shaped camera module comprising:

an image sensor for capturing an image of a scene as a Bayer color filter array image;

a connector having a releasable push on fitting for detachably connecting the cylindrically shaped camera module to the cylindrically shaped printer module through a bus; and

an image processor for processing captured images, transforming the captured image to a contone L*a*b* output image and for transferring the transformed image to the cylindrically shaped printer module through the bus;

wherein the power source of the cylindrically shaped printer module provides is the sole source of power for the cylindrically shaped printer module and the cylindrically shaped camera module.

2. The printer system of claim 1 wherein said image sensor is a CMOS sensor.

3. The printer system of claim 1 wherein said releasable push on fitting is a bayonet fitting.

4. The printer system of claim 1 wherein said bus is a Serial Bus.
