Abstract

A drive mechanism of a printhead cradle is provided which has a motor, a rotor element drive assembly coupled with the motor for operating a rotor element of a printhead received by the printhead cradle, a print media transport assembly coupled with the motor for transporting print media past the received printhead, a controller for controlling the motor, and a rotor element angle sensor in signal communication with the controller for sensing an orientation of the rotor element.

Claims (10)

1. A drive mechanism of a printhead cradle, the drive mechanism comprising:

a motor;

a rotor element drive assembly attached to the printhead cradle and coupled with the motor, the rotor element drive assembly adapted to engage with a rotor element attached to a printhead cartridge received in the printhead cradle and for operating the rotor element;

a print media transport assembly coupled with the motor for transporting print media past the received printhead cartridge;

a controller for controlling the motor; and

a rotor element angle sensor in signal communication with the controller for sensing an orientation of the rotor element.

2. A drive mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the motor comprises a direct drive coupling from a spindle of the motor to a worm-gear and cog transmission to the rotor element and print media transport assemblies.

3. A drive mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor element angle sensor is configured to sense light rays reflected from a light source by a reflective surface of the rotor element.

4. A drive mechanism according to claim 1 , further comprising a paper sensor in signal communication with the controller for sensing the presence of print media.

5. A drive mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor element drive assembly comprises a rotor element translation roller, the rotor element translation roller being positioned in contact with and driven by a drive roller coupled to the motor.
