Abstract

A glass sheet washing machine with a broken glass removal system includes a support, a liquid container or reservoir, a pump, a liquid applicator, and a liquid permeable member. The support supports a glass sheet being washed. The liquid reservoir is positioned below the support. The pump is coupled to the liquid reservoir. The liquid applicator is coupled to the pump. The liquid applicator applies the liquid from the liquid reservoir to wash the glass sheet. Excess liquid falls into the reservoir. The liquid permeable member is positioned between the support and the liquid reservoir to catch pieces of glass to inhibit the pieces of broken glass from falling into the liquid reservoir and is moved to remove the pieces from the glass washing machine.

Claims (38)

1. A method of inhibiting pieces of a broken glass sheet from entering a fluid container of a glass sheet washing machine and removing the pieces from the machine comprising:

a) applying a fluid to a glass sheet on a support to wash said glass sheet;

b) placing a web between a glass sheet support and a fluid container of said glass washing machine;

c) communicating excess fluid applied to said glass sheet through said web to said container;

d) catching pieces of a broken glass sheet with said web to inhibit said pieces from entering said fluid container; and

e) moving said web with respect to said machine to remove said pieces from said machine.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said web is supported by first and second rotatable rolls, said rolls are rotated to move said web to remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein a first end of said web is connected to a first rotatable roll and a second end of said web is connected to a second rotatable roll, said rolls are rotated to move said web and remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said web is a belt disposed around first and second rotatable rolls, said rolls are rotated to move said web and remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein moving said web removes said broken pieces of glass and drops said broken pieces of glass into a trough disposed below said web.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing said web with a substantially uniform thickness formed from rubber.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing said web with a substantially uniform thickness formed from wire mesh.

8. A method of inhibiting pieces of a broken glass sheet from entering a fluid container of a glass sheet washing machine and removing the pieces of broken glass sheet from the machine comprising:

a) applying a fluid to a glass sheet on a support to wash said glass sheet;

b) placing a web having a substantially uniform thickness between a glass sheet washing station comprising at least one brush and liquid applicator and a fluid container of said glass washing machine;

c) communicating excess fluid applied to said glass sheet through said web to said container;

d) catching pieces of a broken glass sheet with said web to inhibit said pieces from entering said fluid container; and

e) moving said web with respect to said machine to remove said pieces from said machine.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein said web is supported by first and second rotatable rolls, said rolls are rotated to move said web to remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein a first end of said web is connected to a first rotatable roll and a second end of said web is connected to a second rotatable roll, said rolls are rotated to move said web and remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein said web is a belt disposed around first and second rotatable rolls, said rolls are rotated to move said web and remove said broken pieces of glass from said glass washing machine.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein moving said web removes said broken pieces of glass and drops said broken pieces of glass into a trough disposed below said web.

13. A method of inhibiting pieces of a broken glass sheet from entering a fluid container of a glass sheet washing machine and removing the pieces of broken glass sheet from the machine comprising:

a) applying a fluid to a glass sheet from at least one washing station comprising at least one brush and liquid applicator for washing said glass sheet;

b) placing a fluid permeable member between said glass sheet washing station and at least one fluid container of said glass washing machine;

c) supporting said fluid permeable member with first and second rotatable rolls;

d) communicating excess fluid applied to said glass sheet through said fluid permeable member to said fluid container;

e) catching pieces of a broken glass sheet with said fluid permeable member to inhibit said pieces from entering said fluid container; and

f) moving said fluid permeable member with respect to said machine by rotating at least one of said first and second rolls to remove said pieces from said machine.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing said liquid permeable member at a length longer than the distance between said first rotatable roll and second rotatable roll such that the extra length of the liquid permeable belt can be positioned on one of the first and second rotatable rolls.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing said liquid permeable member as a continuous liquid permeable web.

16. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing said liquid permeable member as a discontinuous liquid permeable web having a length longer than the distance between said first rotatable roll and second rotatable roll such that the extra length of the liquid permeable web can be positioned on one of the first and second rotatable rolls.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein moving said fluid permeable member removes said broken pieces of glass and drops said broken pieces of glass into a trough disposed below said web.

18. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing said fluid permeable member with a substantially uniform thickness formed from rubber.

19. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing said fluid permeable member with a substantially uniform thickness formed from wire mesh.

20. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing a sensor for detecting broken glass.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising inhibiting pieces of a broken glass sheet from entering the fluid container by automatically enabling the movement of said fluid permeable member once broken glass is detected by said sensor.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising enabling the movement of said fluid permeable member for a prescribed period of time once broken glass is detected by said sensor.
