Abstract

The invention provides a system and method for percutaneous energy delivery in an effective, manner using one or more probes. Additional variations of the system include array of probes configured to minimize the energy required to produce the desired effect.

Claims (33)

1. A method of applying energy from an energy source to a target area of tissue having a plurality of tissue layers, the method comprising:

positioning an electrode array beneath a surface of the tissue in a tissue layer, where the electrode array comprises a plurality of electrode pairs and where the electrode pair comprises a first and second electrodes of opposite polarity each having an active area;

measuring a parameter of the tissue layer adjacent to each active area to identify the tissue layer adjacent to each active area;

visually displaying a characteristic of the tissue layer based on the measured parameter on a graphical user interface; and

applying energy to the electrode array from the energy source during a treatment cycle where the energy applied to each electrode pair is adjusted based upon the measured parameter of the tissue layer.

2. The method of claim 1 , where visually displaying the characteristic of the tissue layer comprises visually displaying the position of the active areas of the electrode array relative to the identified tissue layer.

3. The method of claim 1 , where applying energy to the electrode array comprises selecting a set of controller parameters based on the measured parameter of the tissue layer, the method further comprising supplying an initial energy level from the energy source between the electrodes in the electrode pair to injure tissue and create a fractional lesion between electrodes of the electrode pair, measuring a temperature of the injured tissue; and

modifying the initial energy level using the controller parameters to obtain a target temperature in the injured tissue.

4. The method of claim 1 , where the parameter comprises an impedance value of the tissue layer.

5. The method of claim 4 , where applying energy to the electrode array comprises selectively energizing one or more electrode pairs based in the array to create at least one focal lesion of damaged tissue across the electrode pair, where the focal lesion of damaged tissue is surrounded by uninjured tissue.

6. The method of claim 4 , where visually the characteristic of the tissue layer based comprises correlating the measured impedance value to the identified tissue layer.

7. The method of claim 6 , where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the identified tissue layer as an epidermal region of the tissue if the measured impedance value is less than 250 ohms.

8. The method of claim 6 , where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the identified tissue layer as subcutaneous region of the tissue if the measured impedance value is more than 3000 ohms.

9. The method of claim 6 , where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the identified tissue layer as a dermal region of the tissue if the measured impedance value is between 250 and 3000 ohms.

10. The method of claim 4 , where the graphical user interface is configured to display a plurality of sequentially measured impedance values.

11. The method of claim 1 , where the supply of the energy is adjusted during the application to maintain the temperature of the damaged tissue at a pre-determined temperature.

12. The method of claim 11 , where the energy is limited to a pre-determined maximum level.

13. The method of claim 12 , where a value of the maximum energy is visually displayed on the graphical user interface.

14. The method of claim 1 , where inserting the array of electrode pairs comprises inserting the array of electrode pairs in an oblique angle relative to the surface of tissue.

15. The method of claim 1 , where visually displaying the location of the active areas of the electrode array relative to the identified tissue layer on the graphical user interface comprises displaying an angle of the array of energy transfer elements relative to the surface of tissue.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying a treatment counter indicator configured to show a number of treatment cycles applied by the energy supply unit on the graphical user interface.

17. The method of claim 1 , where the graphical user interface further comprises a temperature indicator configured to display a temperature of the energy transfer portions during the treatment cycle.

18. The method of claim 1 , where the graphical user interface further comprises a temperature indicator configured to display a temperature of the energy transfer portions during the treatment cycle.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a plurality of visually identified sub-target regions on the graphical user interface where each sub-target region correlates to a target area on the target tissue for treatment.

20. The method of claim 19 , where the graphical user interface is configured to permit an operator to select at least one of the sub-target regions.

21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising adjusting at least one parameter of the energy source based upon the selected sub-target region.

22. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting at least one parameter of the energy supply through the graphical user interface.

23. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a stabilization plate adjacent to the tissue engaging surface, where the stabilization plate is spaced from the plurality of energy transfer elements.
