Registration plate assembly for mailpiece conveyance system
View Patent ↗A registration plate assembly for a compliant conveyance system and is adapted for use in combination with an array of print heads each having a print head nozzle. The registration plate assembly includes a mounting plate, a registration plate affixed to the mounting plate and at least one runner fastened to the mounting plate and disposed within an opening defined by the registration plate. The mounting plate has at least one aperture therein for accepting a print head nozzle associated with each of the print head and the registration plate includes and an opening for permitting the deposition of ink from each of the print head nozzles. The runner is aligned with the feed path of the conveyance system and has a blade portion disposed at a location between adjacent print head nozzles which is operative to maintain a stand-off distance from the face surface of each mailpiece to one of the print head nozzles.
1. A registration plate assembly for a compliant conveyance system and adapted for use in combination with an array of print heads each having a print head nozzle, the print head nozzles depositing ink on a face surface of mailpieces being conveyed along a feed path, comprising
a mounting plate having at least one aperture therein for accepting a print head nozzle associated with each of the print heads;
a registration plate affixed to the mounting plate and having at least one opening formed therein for permitting the deposition of ink from each of the print head nozzles, the registration plate defining a plurality of steps, each of the steps corresponding to a print head nozzle;
at least one runner affixed to the mounting plate and aligned with the feed path of the conveyance system, the runner having a blade portion disposed at a location between adjacent print head nozzles and being aligned with, and parallel to, at least one of the registration plate steps, the runner operative to maintain a stand-off distance from the face surface of each mailpiece to one of the print head nozzles.
2. The registration plate assembly according to claim 1 wherein the aperture of the mounting plate compliments the shape and position of the print head nozzles and wherein the opening of the registration plate is stepped to accommodate the array of print head nozzles.

The registration plate assembly according to claim 1 wherein the at least one runner is generally L-shaped and includes a flanged portion aligned with an underside surface of the mounting plate, the flanged portion, furthermore, having a plurality of slotted apertures therein for accepting a fastener to affix the runner to the mounting plate, each slotted aperture disposed orthogonally of the feed path to facilitate lateral position adjustment of the runner relative to the print head nozzles.
4. The registration plate according to claim 1 wherein a stepped edge of the registration plate opening includes a plurality of risers and wherein the runner has a forward end which is aligned with a riser disposed downstream of the step.
5. The registration plate according to claim 1 wherein the registration plate opening has a width dimension W T orthogonal to the feed path of the conveyance system which is at least equal to the sum of the individual width dimensions W I associated with the array of the print head nozzles.
6. The registration plate according to claim 1 further comprising a spacer plate interposing the registration and mounting plates.
7. The registration plate according to claim 6 wherein the spacer plate defines an opening corresponding to the shape of the registration plate opening.
8. The registration plate according to claim 1 further comprising a plurality of runners disposed evenly in a lateral direction across the registration plate opening.
9. The registration plate according to claim 8 wherein the length of each of the runners varies in accordance with the shape of the stepped edge of the registration plate.
