Abstract

A Mixer/Ejector Wind Turbine (“MEWT”) system is disclosed which routinely exceeds the efficiencies of prior wind turbines. Unique ejector concepts are used to fluid-dynamically improve many operational characteristics of conventional wind turbines for potential power generation improvements of 50% and above. Applicants' preferred MEWT embodiment comprises: an aerodynamically contoured turbine shroud with an inlet; a ring of stator vanes; a ring of rotating blades (i.e., an impeller) in line with the stator vanes; and a mixer/ejector pump to increase the flow volume through the turbine while rapidly mixing the low energy turbine exit flow with high energy bypass wind flow. The MEWT can produce three or more time the power of its un-shrouded counterparts for the same frontal area, and can increase the productivity of wind farms by a factor of two or more. The same MEWT is safer and quieter providing improved wind turbine options for populated areas.

Claims (29)

1. An axial flow wind turbine comprising:

an aerodynamically contoured turbine shroud with an inlet, an outlet, and a ring of mixer lobes arranged along a trailing edge;

a single turbine stage mounted within the turbine shroud that is configured for exposure to ambient wind flow; and

an ejector shroud downstream of the turbine shroud, the ejector shroud having an inlet and an outlet, the trailing edge of the turbine shroud extending into the ejector shroud inlet.

2. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 1 wherein the ejector shroud further comprises a ring of mixer lobes, the mixer lobes being arranged around a trailing edge of the ejector shroud.

3. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 1 , wherein the wind turbine is mounted onto a vertical support shaft by a rotating coupling located forward of a center-of-pressure location on the wind turbine, to allow the wind turbine to freely swivel into an incoming wind stream.

4. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 1 wherein the wind turbine includes at least one moveable blocker inside the turbine shroud or the ejector shroud to impede the amount of flow through the wind turbine.

5. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 1 wherein the exterior surface of the ejector shroud contains a self-adjusting movable wing-tab for aerodynamically assisting alignment of the turbine with the oncoming flow direction and damping flow turbulence induced oscillations of the system.

6. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 1 , wherein the turbine stage comprises a ring of stator vanes and a ring of rotor blades, wherein the stator vanes can be mechanically rotated to better align the stator exit flow with the rotor blades at all operating conditions.

7. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 6 , wherein the ring of rotor blades is connected to a power takeoff in the form of a wheel-like structure around the turbine stage.

8. An axial flow wind turbine, comprising:

an aerodynamically contoured turbine shroud having an outlet, an inlet for receiving a primary air stream, and a ring of mixer lobes arranged around a trailing edge;

a single turbine stage within the primary duct that is configured for exposure to ambient wind flow; and

an ejector shroud having an inlet and an outlet, the trailing edge of the turbine shroud extending into the ejector shroud inlet.

9. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the ejector shroud inlet has a cross-sectional area greater than a cross-sectional area of the ejector shroud outlet.

10. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the ejector shroud outlet has a cross-sectional area greater than a cross-sectional area of the ejector shroud inlet.

11. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine shroud is cambered to increase the speed of the primary air stream.

12. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine shroud comprises a material that abates noise produced within the turbine shroud.

13. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the ejector shroud inlet has a non-circular cross-section.

14. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine shroud outlet has a cross-sectional area greater than a cross-sectional area of the turbine shroud inlet.

15. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , further comprising a swivel joint on a lower outer surface for mounting the turbine on a pylon.

16. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , further comprising a stabilizer vane mounted on an exterior for pointing the turbine shroud inlet into an air stream.

17. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the ejector shroud comprises mixer lobes spacedly arranged around the ejector shroud outlet.

18. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine stage comprises a propeller.

19. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine stage comprises a stator ring and a rotor.

20. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein the turbine shroud has from 6 to 14 mixer lobes.

21. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein each mixer lobe has an inner trailing edge angle between 5 and 25 degrees.

22. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein each mixer lobe has an outer trailing edge angle between 5 and 25 degrees.

23. The axial flow wind turbine of claim 8 , wherein a length of the turbine shroud is equal to or less than an outer maximum diameter of the turbine shroud.
