Abstract

An adapter assembly allows mechanical coupling of prosthetic components such that a distal end of a socket adapter ( 160 ) extends below a top surface of a prosthetic ( 100 ). The adapter assembly may include sets of external threads ( 314, 324 ) to operatively engage internally threaded surfaces ( 170, 110 ) of the prosthetic and the socket adapter.

Claims (21)

1. An adapter assembly for mechanically coupling prosthetic components, the adapter assembly comprising:

a generally hollow and generally cylindrical female element including an outer surface including exterior threads configured to operatively engage an internally threaded surface proximate to a distal end of a socket adapter, an upper portion including a lip projecting inwardly from an interior surface, and a lower portion including a concave surface configured to conformally engage a convex top surface of a prosthetic; and

a generally cylindrical male element including an outer surface including exterior threads configured to operatively engage an internally threaded surface of the prosthetic, a substantially flat upper portion including a lip projecting outwardly from the outer surface and configured to engage the lip of the female element and to compress the lower portion of the female element against the top surface of the prosthetic;

wherein an outer diameter of the exterior threads of the male element is smaller than an interior of the female element such that the exterior threads of the male element are able to pass through the female element without threadingly engaging any internal surface of the female element, and when the lip of the male element engages the lip of the female element, a top surface of the male element is flush with a top surface of the female element and the externally threaded surface of the male element extends below a bottom surface of the female element.

2. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a fastening device configured to receive a tool and translate motion from said tool into rotation of at least a portion of the adapter assembly upon application of a substantially transverse force to the fastening device by said tool.

3. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the male element and the female element comprise different materials.

4. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the male element and the female element are coated with a corrosion inhibitor.

5. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the exterior threads of said female element extend substantially the entire height of the outer surface of said female element.

6. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the exterior threads of said female element extend only partially over the height of the outer surface of said female element.

7. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the exterior threads of said male element extend for a length similar to a depth of the internally threaded surface of the prosthetic.

8. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the exterior threads of said male element extend only for a portion of a depth of the internally threaded surface of the prosthetic.

9. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the female element is configured to extend below the top surface of the prosthetic when the prosthetic components are coupled with the adapter assembly.

10. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adapter assembly is adhered together during or after assembly.

11. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled, a height of the adapter assembly measured between a top end and a bottom end is between about 14 mm and about 27.3 mm.

12. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled, a height of the adapter assembly measured between a top end and a bottom end is between about 14 mm and about 22 mm.

13. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled, a height of the adapter assembly measured between a top end and a bottom end is between about 14 mm and about 18 mm.

14. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled, a height of the adapter assembly measured between a top end and a bottom end is between about 14 mm and about 16 mm.

15. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled and engaged with the prosthetic, a height measured between the top surface of the prosthetic and a top end of the adapter assembly is between about 6 mm and about 19.3 mm.

16. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled and engaged with the prosthetic, a height measured between the top surface of the prosthetic and a top end of the adapter assembly is between about 6 mm and about 16 mm.

17. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled and engaged with the prosthetic, a height measured between the top surface of the prosthetic and a top end of the adapter assembly is between about 6 mm and about 12 mm.

18. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the adapter assembly is assembled and engaged with the prosthetic, a height measured between the top surface of the prosthetic and a top end of the adapter assembly is between about 6 mm and about 8 mm.
