Self-aligning radioisotope elution system
View Patent ↗A radioisotope elution system including a radioisotope generator having an alignment structure. The alignment structure may be configured to interface with a complementary alignment structure of an auxiliary radiation shield assembly.
1. A radioisotope generator comprising:
a generator body that includes an elution column, and at least one radiation shielding material selected from depleted uranium, tungsten, tungsten impregnated plastic, or lead;
a needle assembly comprising an input needle and an output needle, wherein the input needle is fluidly interconnected with an input to the elution column, and the output needle is fluidly interconnected with an output from the elution column; and
a cap having a recess defined therein, wherein the recess is in the form of a cylinder having both a base and walls that are generally perpendicular to the base, and wherein both the input needle and the output needle of the needle assembly are located within the same recess defined in the cap.
2. The radioisotope generator of claim 1 , wherein the walls of the recess are substantially parallel to the needle.

The radioisotope generator of claim 1 in combination with a radiation shield, wherein the radiation shield includes a lid having opposing top and bottom surfaces, the lid including a male alignment structure extending downward from the bottom surface, the structure defining a cylinder that is complementary to the recess of the radioisotope generator cap such that the structure is configured to mate with the recess, wherein the lid comprises at least one radiation shielding material selected from depleted uranium, tungsten, tungsten impregnated plastic, or lead.
4. The radioisotope generator and radiation shield of claim 3 , wherein the lid includes a first aperture that extends through the lid in a direction that is substantially parallel to an input needle on the radioisotope generator when the lid is mated with the radioisotope generator cap.
5. The radioisotope generator and radiation shield of claim 4 , wherein the lid includes a second aperture that extends through the lid in a direction that is substantially parallel to an output needle on the radioisotope generator when the lid is mated with the radioisotope generator cap.

The radioisotope generator and radiation shield of claim 3 , wherein the radiation shield comprises an auxiliary shield having a receptacle defined therein for receiving the radioisotope generator, and wherein the lid is shaped such that the lid can translate into the receptacle and mate with the radioisotope generator cap.
7. The radioisotope generator and radiation shield of claim 3 , wherein the radioisotope generator is configured to support at least part of a weight of the lid when the lid is mated with the radioisotope generator cap.
8. The radioisotope generator and radiation shield of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the radiation shield is over-molded in a polymer.
9. The radioisotope generator of claim 1 , wherein the base of the recess is oval.
10. The radioisotope generator of claim 9 , wherein the recess has a single plane of symmetry that is generally perpendicular to the base.
11. The radioisotope generator of claim 1 , wherein the cap includes a plurality of tabs that facilitate coupling the cap to the generator body.
12. The radioisotope generator of claim 1 , further comprising a lifting strap coupled to the generator body at a first strap support and a second strap support.
13. The radioisotope generator of claim 12 , wherein the cap includes a first support channel that engages the first strap support and a second support channel that engages the second strap support to align the cap with respect to the generator body.
