Abstract

Methods of preparing bioactive composites are described. Also described are methods of molding such composites. Shaped bodies comprising bioactive composites are further described.

Claims (20)

1. A bioactive composite comprising a substantially homogenous mixture of polyetheretherketone and an alkali containing bioactive glass having osteoproductive properties, wherein the bioactive glass has a particle size range from 1 to 400 microns, and wherein the bioactive glass comprises from 5% to 60% by weight of the composite wherein at least a portion of the surface alkali of the bioactive glass is depleted from about 5 microns to about 10 microns into the bioactive glass such that alkali reactivity with the polyetheretherketone is reduced at the surface of the bioactive composite.

2. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the polyetheretherketone has a particle size range from 1 to 400 microns prior to formation of said composite.

3. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass is combeite having a particle size range from 1 to 200 microns.

4. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass is combeite having a particle size range from about 90 to 150 microns.

5. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass is combeite having a particle size of less than 53 microns.

6. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass comprises from 45% to 55% by weight of the composite.

7. The bioactive composite of claim 1 , wherein the composite further comprises a filler.

8. The bioactive composite of claim 7 , wherein the filler is at least one selected from the group consisting of a reinforcing fiber, carbon, glass, a radiopaque material, barium glass, a resorbable material.

9. The bioactive composite of claim 7 , wherein the filler is a calcium phosphate material.

10. A bioactive composite comprising a substantially homogenous blend of polyetheretherketone and combeite,

wherein the polyetheretherketone has a particle size range from 1 to 400 microns,

wherein the combeite having has a particle size range from 1 to 400 microns, and,

wherein the combeite comprises between about 5% to about 60% by weight of the composite,

wherein at least a portion of the surface alkali of the bioactive glass is depleted from about 5 microns to about 10 microns into the bioactive glass such that alkali reactivity with the polyetheretherketone is reduced at the surface of the bioactive composite.

11. The bioactive composite of claim 10 , wherein the combeite comprises from 20% to 40% by weight of the composite.

12. A shaped body for intracorporeal implantation comprising the bioactive composite of claim 1 .

13. A intracorporeal implant comprising the bioactive composite of claim 1 .

14. A spinal implant comprising the bioactive composite of claim 1 .

15. The bioactive composite of claim 1 prepared from a blend of polyetheretherketone particles and alkali-containing bioactive glass ceramic particles; the blend formed into a particle mixture to which a polar organic solvent has been added to form a weight ratio of solvent to particle mixture of about 1:1 to about 4:1; the mixture having been agitated for a time and under conditions sufficient to achieve substantial homogeneity of the mixture; and substantially all of the solvent having been removed from the particle mixture.

16. A shaped body formed by shaping the bioactive composite of claim 15 under conditions of heat pressurization to melt the bioactive composite.
