Abstract

A method of making a flexographic printing form precursor for laser engraving including the steps of (i) providing at least one layer of a curable composition on a substrate; (ii) curing the at least one layer; wherein the curable composition defining an outermost layer includes at least 0.5 % by weight relative to the total weight of the composition of an organo-silicon compound including at least one polymerizable group; and a urethane (meth)acrylate oligomer having three or less polymerizable groups.

Claims (32)

1. A method for making a flexographic printing forme comprising the steps of:

providing a flexographic printing forme precursor, the precursor being prepared by:

(i) providing at least one layer of a curable composition on a substrate; and

(ii) curing the at least one layer; and

imagewise exposing the precursor with a laser to engrave a relief image in the precursor; wherein

the curable composition defining an outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme includes at least 0.5% and less than 20% by weight, relative to the total weight of the curable composition, of an organo-silicon compound including at least one polymerizable group; and

the organo-silicon compound includes at least four polymerizable groups.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the organo-silicon compound includes at least six polymerizable groups.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein an amount of the organo-silicon compound is at least 2.5% by weight relative to the total weight of the curable composition.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the curable composition defining the outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme further includes a photo-initiator.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein if more than one layer of the curable composition is provided on the substrate, the curing step is performed after each layer of the curable composition is provided.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of curing the at least one layer is performed with ultraviolet radiation.

7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the step of curing is performed with ultraviolet radiation.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the step of curing the at least one layer includes first and second steps of curing with UV-A or UV-C radiation.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the step of curing the at least one layer includes first and second steps of curing with UV-A or UV-C radiation.

10. A method for making a flexographic printing forme comprising the steps of:

providing a flexographic printing forme precursor, the precursor being prepared by:

(i) providing at least one layer of a curable composition on a substrate; and

(ii) curing the at least one layer; and

imagewise exposing the precursor with a laser to engrave a relief image in the precursor; wherein

the curable composition defining an outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme includes at least 0.5% by weight, relative to the total weight of the curable composition, of an organo-silicon compound including at least one polymerizable group;

the curable composition defining the outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme consists essentially of the organo-silicon compound, or consists essentially of the organo-silicon compound and a photo-initiator; and

the curable composition defining the outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme which consists essentially of the organo-silicon compound is cured with electron beam irradiation.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the organo-silicon compound includes at least six polymerizable groups.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein at least one of the layers of curable composition includes at least 50% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition, of a urethane (meth)acrylate oligomer.

13. A method for making a flexographic printing forme comprising the steps of:

providing a flexographic printing forme precursor, the precursor being prepared by:

(i) providing at least one layer of a curable composition on a substrate; and

(ii) curing the at least one layer; and

imagewise exposing the precursor with a laser to engrave a relief image in the precursor; wherein

the curable composition defining an outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme includes at least 0.5% by weight, relative to the total weight of the curable composition, of an organo-silicon compound including at least one polymerizable group; and

the curable composition defining the outermost layer of the flexographic printing forme further includes at least 50% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition, of a urethane (meth)acrylate oligomer.
