Abstract

A dual polarized variable beam tilt antenna having a superior Sector Power Ratio (SPR). The antenna may have slant 45 degree dipole radiating elements including directors, and may be disposed on a plurality of tilted element trays to orient an antenna boresight downtilt. The directors may be disposed above or about the respective dipole radiating elements. The antenna has a beam front-to-side ratio exceeding 20 dB, a horizontal beam front-to-back ratio exceeding 40 dB, a high-roll off, and is operable over an expanded frequency range.

Claims (33)

1. An antenna, comprising:

a first dipole radiating element configured to generate a first beam and a second dipole radiating element configured to generate a second beam wherein the first and second dipole radiating elements are configured as a cross dipole; and

at least one director comprised of at least 2 members disposed proximate the first and second dipole radiating elements and configured to direct the first and second beams, wherein the members form a cross parallel to the cross dipole in a vertical direction, wherein the at least one director is configured to improve a Sector Power Ratio (SPR) of the beams while maintaining a substantially equivalent gain as compared to the antenna without the at least one director.

2. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the antenna has a Sector Power Ratio of less than 10%.

3. The antenna as specified in claim 2 wherein the antenna has a Sector Power Ratio of less than 5%.

4. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the director comprises at least 2 members parallel to one another.

5. The antenna as specified in claim 4 wherein said at least 2 of the directors are parallel to one another in the vertical direction.

6. The antenna as specified in claim 4 wherein at least some of the members are uniformly spaced from one another.

7. The antenna as specified in claim 4 wherein one of the members is spaced closer to the first radiating element than to an adjacent said member.

8. The antenna as specified in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of polygon shaped rings disposed over the radiating elements.

9. The antenna as specified in claim 8 wherein the polygon shaped rings are concentric.

10. The antenna as specified in claim 9 wherein the polygon shaped rings have a common diameter.

11. The antenna as specified in claim 9 wherein the polygon shaped rings have different diameters and form a tapered director.

12. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the members have different lengths and form a tapered director.

13. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the antenna has a front-to-side ratio of at least 20 dB.

14. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the antenna has a front-to-back ratio of at least 40 dB.

15. An antenna, comprising:

a ground plane;

a first dipole radiating element disposed in front of the ground plane and configured to generate a first beam and a second dipole radiating element configured to generate a second beam; and

a director disposed in front of the first and second dipole radiating elements configured to direct the first and second beams, wherein the director is configured to improve a Sector Power Ratio (SPR) of the beams while maintaining a substantially equivalent gain as compared to the antenna without the director.

16. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director establishes a front-to-back ratio of the beams of at least about 40 dB.

17. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director establishes a Sector Power Ratio of the beams being less than 5%.

18. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director establishes a Sector Power Ratio of the beams being less than 2%.

19. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director establishes a front-to-side ratio of the beams of at least about 20 dB.

20. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director is disposed from the first dipole radiating element about 0.15 lambda of the first beam or less.

21. An antenna, comprising:

a first dipole radiating element configured to generate a first beam and a second dipole radiating element configured to generate a second beam; and

at least one director disposed proximate the first and second dipole radiating elements and configured to direct the first and second beams, wherein the at least one director comprises a polygon shaped ring, wherein the directors extend in a vertical direction, wherein the at least one director is configured to improve a Sector Power Ratio (SPR) of the beams while maintaining a substantially equivalent gain as compared to the antenna without the director.

22. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the at least one director is positioned in front of the first and second dipole radiating elements.

23. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director is positioned in front of the first and second dipole radiating elements.

24. The antenna as specified in claim 21 wherein the at least one director is positioned in front of the first and second dipole radiating elements.

25. The antenna as specified in claim 1 wherein the at least one director is shorter than the first and second dipole radiating elements.

26. The antenna as specified in claim 15 wherein the director is shorter than the first and second dipole radiating elements.
