Abstract

An endoscope including a shaft having a deflectable distal end; a handle at a proximal end of the shaft; and a deflection control connected to the distal end. The deflection control includes a combined lock and deflection control member at the handle. The control member is adapted to be moved to a selected location by a single finger of a user and thereby deflect the distal end. The control member is adapted to be locked at the user selected location by movement of the control member to a locked position by the single finger of the user.

Claims (13)

1. An endoscope comprising:

a shaft having a deflectable distal end;

a handle at a proximal end of the shaft; and

a deflection control connected to the distal end, wherein the deflection control comprises a combined lock and deflection control member at the handle,

wherein the combined lock and deflection control member comprises a finger lever and a control lever, the finger lever is pivotably connected to the control lever by a pivot pin and comprises a first end and a second end on opposite sides of the pivot pin,

wherein the finger lever comprises a receiving section at the first end and a lock section at the second end, the receiving section is adapted to be pushed and rotated by a single finger with a single button press of a user and the lock section is adapted to contact an engaging section on the handle so that the control member is locked to a locked position,

wherein the finger lever is configured to pivot on the control lever as the receiving section is pushed in a first direction,

wherein the lock section is adapted to be disengaged from the engaging section in response to the receiving section being pushed in the first direction,

wherein the finger lever is rotated in response to the receiving section being rotated in a second direction,

wherein the first direction is different from the second direction of the rotation of the finger lever, and

wherein the control lever is connected to a control wire pulley of the deflection control, and where the combined lock and deflection control member is configured such that the rotation of the finger lever causes a rotation of the control lever and the control wire pulley.

2. An endoscope as in claim 1 wherein the finger lever is biased by a spring towards the engaging section.

3. An endoscope as in claim 1 wherein the engaging section on the handle comprises a curved insert mounted onto the handle.
