Abstract

A method and a system are provided for managing metadata for occurrences of a recording. In one example, the system receives a recording. The recording includes computer readable media data. The system generates an internal identifier of the recording. The internal identifier is a signature that uniquely identifies the recording. The system then adds the internal identifier to metadata that are associated with at least one occurrence of the recording. The metadata are data that describe the recording.

Claims (104)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a recording, wherein the recording includes computer readable media data;

generating, by use of one or more processors, an internal identifier for the recording, wherein the internal identifier is a signature that uniquely identities the recording;

adding the internal identifier to a plurality of internal identifier fields of a plurality of structures for metadata, wherein the plurality of structures includes metadata associated with a plurality of different occurrences of the recording, wherein the metadata included in the structures is data that describes the computer readable media data included in each of the plurality of different occurrences of the recording, and wherein each of the plurality of structures is stored in a database, and

generating, by use of the one or more processors, a link between the internal identifier in the metadata of each of the plurality of different occurrences of the recording and an external identifier not in the metadata, wherein the external identifier is derived from audio or video data of the recording.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein adding the internal identifier comprises:

adding the internal identifier to an internal identifier field of a structure for first metadata associated with a first occurrence of the recording; and

adding the internal identifier to an internal identifier field of a structure for second metadata associated with a second occurrence of the recording, wherein the metadata associated with the first occurrence of the recording is different than the metadata associated with the second occurrence of the recording.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata included in the structures includes at least one of:

a track title, wherein the track title is different from another track title in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

an album title, wherein the album title is different from another album title in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

a track date, wherein the track date is different from another track date in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

a genre, wherein the genre is different from another genre in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording artist information, wherein the artist information is different from another artist information in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording; and

album information, wherein the album information is different from another album information in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recording includes at least one of:

an audio track;

a video track;

a song;

a chapter;

a CD recording;

DVD recording; and

a Blu-ray Disc recording.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the internal identifier by using at least one of:

an audio fingerprint of the recording;

a portion of an audio fingerprint of the recording;

an identifier derived from an audio fingerprint of the recording;

an audio identifier of the recording;

a video identifier of the recording;

a disc identifier;

a compact disc identifier;

a digital video disc identifier;

Blu-ray Disc identifier;

a media identifier; and

a high definition media identifier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata is associated with the recording after the recording is ripped from a computer readable medium.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the computer readable medium is at least one of:

a disc;

an optical disc;

a compact disc;

a digital video disc; and

a Blu-ray Disc.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata included in the structures includes at least one of:

a track name;

a song name;

artist information;

album information;

relational information; and

supplemental information.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recording is stored separately from the database that stores each of the plurality of structures.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recording is stored in a user device, and each of the plurality or structures are stored in a device external to the user device.

11. A system including at least one processor for storing an internal identifier in metadata, wherein the system is configured for:

receiving a recording, wherein the recording includes computer readable media data;

generating an internal identifier for the recording, wherein the internal identifier is a signature that uniquely identifies the recording;

adding the internal identifier to a plurality of internal identifier fields of a plurality of structures for metadata, wherein the plurality of structures includes metadata associated with a plurality of different occurrences of the recording, wherein the metadata included in the structures is data that describes the computer readable media data included in each of the plurality of different occurrences of the recording, and wherein each of the plurality of structures is stored in a database, and

generating, by use of the one or more processors, a link between the internal identifier in the metadata of each of the plurality of different occurrences of the recording and an external identifier not in the metadata, wherein the external identifier is derived from audio or video data of the recording.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein adding the internal identifier comprises:

adding the internal identifier to an internal identifier field of a structure for first metadata associated with a first occurrence of the recording; and

adding the internal identifier to an internal identifier field of a structure for second metadata associated with a second occurrence of the recording, wherein the metadata associated with the first occurrence of the recording is different than the metadata associated with the second occurrence of the recording.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the metadata included in the structures includes at least one of:

a track title, wherein the track title is different from another track title in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

an album title, wherein the album title is different from another album title in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

a track date, wherein the track date is different from another track date in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

a genre, wherein the genre is different from another genre in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording;

artist information, wherein the artist information is different from another artist information in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording; and

album information, wherein the album information is different from another album information in other metadata associated with another occurrence of the recording.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the recording includes at least one of:

an audio track;

a video track;

a song;

a chapter;

a CD recording;

a DVD recording; and

a Blu-ray Disc recording.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the system is further configured for generating an internal identifier by using at least one of:

an audio fingerprint of the recording;

a portion of an audio fingerprint of the recording;

an identifier derived from an audio fingerprint of the recording;

an audio identifier of the recording;

a video identifier of the recording;

a disc identifier;

a compact disc identifier;

a digital video disc identifier;

a Blu-ray Disc identifier;

a media identifier; and

a high definition media identifier.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the metadata is associated with the recording after the recording is ripped from a computer readable medium.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the computer readable medium is at least one of:

a disc;

an optical disc;

a compact disc;

a digital video disc; and

a Blu-ray Disc.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the metadata included in the structures includes at least one of:

a track name;

a song name;

artist information;

album information;

relational information; and

supplemental information.

19. A non-transitory computer readable medium carrying one or more instructions for storing an internal identifier in metadata, wherein the one or more instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the steps of:

receiving a recording, wherein the recording includes computer readable media data;

generating an internal identifier for the recording, wherein the internal identifier is a signature that uniquely identifies the recording;

adding the internal identifier to a plurality of internal identifier fields of a plurality of structures for metadata, wherein the plurality of structures includes metadata associated with a plurality of different occurrences of the recording, wherein the metadata included in the structures is data that describes the computer readable media data included in each of the plurality of different occurrences of the recording, and wherein each of the plurality of structures is stored in a database, and
