Abstract

Devices and methods for RF heating of food, using techniques which allow uniformity and/or controlled non-uniformity.

Claims (30)

1. A heater for dielectrically heating a load positioned in a cavity using UHF or microwave energy, the heater comprising:

an UHF or microwave heating element for feeding UHF or microwave energy into the cavity;

a memory storing a computer executable program; and

a controller device communicatively connected to the memory, wherein when the computer executable program is executed by the controller device, the controller device performs operations comprising:

selecting between first and second heating modes;

identifying at least one absorption peak at a corresponding peak frequency; and

for each identified absorption peak:

determining a frequency band associated with the identified absorption peak, the frequency band including the peak frequency corresponding to the identified absorption peak, wherein the frequency band is determined to be broader when the first heating mode is selected than when the second heating mode is selected; and

controlling the UHF or microwave heating element to heat the load by feeding the cavity with UHF or microwave energy at frequencies of the determined frequency band.

2. The heater according to claim 1 , including a user interface for selecting which heating mode to use.

3. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein the heating is performed while ensuring a maximum temperature below a safety threshold in at least part of the load.

4. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein the heating is performed while ensuring a maximum temperature in at least part of the load, the maximum temperature being below a threshold temperature where increased evaporation occurs.

5. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise controlling the UHF or microwave heating element to heat the load within 1 minute by at least 20 degrees Celsius, wherein the load has weight of at least 200 grams.

6. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein the UHF or microwave heating element is configured to provide power at a plurality of frequencies and the heater comprises a secondary heating element configured to be activated by only a subset of the plurality of frequencies, and wherein the operations comprise determining which frequencies to use for the UHF or microwave heating element thereby setting a time of operation of the secondary heating element.

7. The heater according to claim 6 , wherein the operations comprise controlling a frequency of the UHF or microwave heating element according to the selected heating mode.

8. The heater according to claim 1 , comprising a sensor for estimating at least one characteristic of the load, the operations comprise controlling the UHF or microwave heating element according to the estimation.

9. The heater according to claim 1 , the the operations comprise controlling the UHF or microwave heating element so as to perform frequency sweep for estimating at least one characteristic of the load, and controlling the UHF or microwave heating element according to the estimation.

10. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the first heating mode differs from the second heating mode in tradeoffs between speed of heating and uniformity of heating.

11. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the first heating mode differs from the second heating mode in a manner of using a reverse image of a spectral image within a frequency band.

12. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein an absorption peak includes an energy dissipation peak in the load.

13. The heater according to claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise:

heating the load using a heating oven;

receiving feedback on the heating process by the heating oven; and

automatically changing a heating parameter of the heating oven in response to the feedback.

14. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to operations comprise:

identifying first and second absorption peaks; and

determining a first frequency band associated with the first absorption peak and a second frequency band associated with the second absorption peak, wherein the first frequency band is wider than the second frequency band.

15. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise controlling the UHF or microwave heating element to heat the load by transmitting into the cavity UHF or microwave energy at differing power levels at differing frequencies of a frequency band determined for an identified absorption peak.

16. The heater of claim 15 , wherein the differing power levels are inversely related to energy absorption efficiencies across the differing frequencies of the frequency band determined for the identified absorption peak.

17. The heater of claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise changing a power amplification of a power amplifier inversely relating to a power efficiency determined at a frequency in the determined frequency band.
