Abstract

An inter-networking system and method that provides for access control identifier (ACI) metadata utilization for the life of a session even on unknown networks being traversed, allowing for ACI metadata utilization, reutilization, and modification in both the send and receive paths (bi-directional), and allowing for metadata transport over network segments requiring that ACIs be embedded at different layers of the communications stack.

Claims (10)

1. A service facility in an inter-networking environment for applying service applications to inbound data intercepted on a communications path and for retaining session data including access control identifier (ACI) metadata across said service facility for forwarding on said communications path, comprising:

a communications channel manager having facilities for reading header data including said ACI metadata received with said inbound data on each of various layers of a communications stack within said communications path and for writing header data to be forwarded on the communications path on the various layers of said communications stack;

an ACI policy manager coupled to a memory, the ACI policy manager including a processor programmed to provide rules to be applied to the ACIs, said ACI policy manager including an ACI reader for transferring the ACI metadata from said communications channel manager to said ACI policy manager, and further including an ACI writer for transferring the ACI metadata from said ACI policy manager to said communications channel manager and to the memory, said communications channel manager configured to write the ACI metadata received from said ACI writer to a same layer or a different layer of said communications stack on which the ACI metadata was received; and

a service manager for controlling a plurality of service applications to be performed on said inbound data including said ACI metadata received from the ACI policy manager.

2. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said service applications include an inter-service transport mechanism for transferring the ACIs stored in said memory to a memory in another service facility.

3. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said header reader reads header data from a first layer of said communications stack on an inbound side of said service facility and said header writer writes said header data to a second layer of said communications stack on an output side of said service facility, said first layer being higher than said second layer within said communications stack.

4. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said header reader reads header data from a first layer of said communications stack on an inbound side of said service facility and said header writer writes said header data to a second layer of said communications stack on an output side of said service facility, said first layer being lower than said second layer within said communications stack.

5. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said header reader reads header data from a first layer of said communications stack on an inbound side of said service facility and said header writer writes said header data to a second layer of said communications stack on an output side of said service facility, said first layer and said second layer being at a same level within said communications stack.

6. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein session data is transitioned across said service facility at any of said layers within said communications stack that have a layer thereabove which does not transition session data.

7. The service facility as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said communications channel manager reads the ACI metadata and writes the ACI metadata responsive to a session protocol.
