Abstract

The present invention provides a method for removing mercury in exhaust gas, in which mercury in exhaust gas discharged from combustion equipment is removed, characterized by including a mercury oxidation process in which mercury in the exhaust gas is converted to mercury chloride in the presence of a catalyst; a contact process in which the exhaust gas is brought into contact with an absorbing solution in a scrubber to absorb and remove mercury components from the exhaust gas; and a control process in which blowing of air or addition of an oxidizing agent into the scrubber is accomplished, and the amount of blown air or the added amount of oxidizing agent is regulated to control the oxidation-reduction potential of the absorbing agent, and a system for removing mercury in exhaust gas. According to the mercury removing method in accordance with the present invention, a phenomenon that mercury chloride is reduced into metallic mercury by SO 2 etc. and the metallic mercury scatters in the exhaust gas can be prevented, and mercury in the exhaust gas can be decreased effectively.

Claims (21)

1. An apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas, in which mercury in exhaust gas discharged from combustion equipment is removed, said apparatus comprising:

(a) a denitrification apparatus located downstream from said combustion equipment, said denitrification apparatus having a denitrification catalyst adapted to convert metallic mercury in said exhaust gas to mercury chloride;

(b) a scrubber including:

(1) a cooling tower with an aqueous alkali absorbing solution and a first electrometer that measures the oxidation-reduction potential of the absorbing solution in said cooling tower

(2) a desulfurization absorption tower with an aqueous alkali absorbing solution and a second electrometer that measures the oxidation-reduction potential of the absorbing solution in said desulfurization absorption tower,

wherein said desulfurization absorption tower is separate from the cooling tower and located downstream from said cooling tower, and

wherein said desulfurization absorption tower is adapted to remove the mercury chloride from the exhaust gas by contacting said exhaust gas with said absorbing solution,

(3) a first introduction pipe that provides a first amount of blown air, said first introduction pipe bifurcates to feed a first portion of said first amount of blown air to said cooling tower and also feeds a second portion of said first amount of blown air to said desulfurization absorption tower,

said first introduction pipe has a first valve located between the bifurcation section and the cooling tower, and said first introduction pipe has a second valve located between the bifurcation section and the desulfurization absorption tower, wherein the first valve is opened or closed in response to the first electrometer measurements and the second valve is opened or closed in response to the second electrometer measurements;

(c) a mist eliminator located downstream from the desulfurization absorption tower, said mist eliminator includes a contact area where a cleaning solution contacts said exhaust gas;

(d) a cleaning solution tank connected to recirculate cleaning solution with the mist eliminator,

wherein said cleaning solution tank comprising cleaning solution and a third electrometer,

wherein resulting liquid remaining after cleaning solution contacts exhaust gas in the mist eliminator is sent to the cleaning solution tank,

said third electrometer continuously measures the oxidation-reduction potential of said cleaning solution; and,

(e) a second introduction pipe that provides a second amount of blown air to said cleaning solution tank, said second introduction pipe includes a third valve, wherein the third valve is opened or closed in response to the third electrometer measurements.

2. The apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas according to claim 1 characterized in that said system further comprises a treatment tank, which is provided on the downstream side of said scrubber, adapted to oxidize products in said absorbing solution by an acid or an oxidizing agent.

3. The apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas according to claim 1 wherein said gas-liquid contact section is provided on the downstream side of said scrubber, adapted to bring the cleaning solution into contact with said exhaust gas, and said gas-liquid contact section further comprises a second electrometer adapted to measure the oxidation-reduction potential of said cleaning solution.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the denitrification catalyst comprises an active metal selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru, Cu, Co, Fe, Ag, Mn, Ni, Zn and In.

5. The apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas according to claim 1 , wherein a load signal, based on a detection valve of at least one of the detector and the meter is configured to control the first amount of blown air introduced into the scrubber.

6. The apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas according to claim 1 , wherein the first amount of blown air is in excess of the amount required for oxidation of sulfites in the absorbing solution.

7. The apparatus for removing mercury in exhaust gas according to claim 6 , further comprising a gypsum separator adapted to recover the oxidized sulfites as gypsum.
