Abstract

A method of presenting weather phenomenon information including receiving weather data. At least one weather phenomenon represented by the weather data is identified. A plurality of current parameters related to the current state of the at least one weather phenomenon is determined. A plurality of historical parameters corresponding to one or more previous states of the at least one weather phenomenon is associated with the current state of the at least one weather phenomenon if at least one previous state of the at least one weather phenomenon has been identified. A plurality of forecasted parameters for the at least one weather phenomenon is calculated. Characteristics of the at least one weather phenomenon based on at least a first subset of the current parameters, the historical parameters, and the forecasted parameters are displayed.

Claims (36)

1. A method of presenting thunderstorm information:

(a) identifying a thunderstorm;

(b) retrieving weather data associated with the thunderstorm;

(c) determining a plurality of parameters for the thunderstorm from the weather data, wherein the plurality of parameters include current and predicted parameters of the thunderstorm corresponding to a current state and a future state of the thunderstorm, respectively; and

(d) displaying characteristics of the thunderstorm, wherein the variation over time of the parameters of the thunderstorm are presented based on a set of severity indices determined from at least a subset of the plurality of parameters, each severity index describing an impact to property or population from a different threat associated with the thunderstorm.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

(e) appending the parameters determined in step (c) to the weather data retrieved in step (b).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristics of the thunderstorm are presented with respect to other thunderstorms within a geographic region corresponding to the thunderstorm.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the variation over time of the parameters is represented during the displaying of the characteristics using a graphic representation of at least one of the set of severity indices corresponding to the thunderstorm.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the order of displaying the thunderstorm characteristics is based on the set of severity indices.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the weather data is identified using weather data obtained from one or more sources of weather data, the one or more sources of weather data comprising at least one primary source of weather data and at least one secondary source of weather data.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a subset of the future parameters of the thunderstorm is determined by synthesizing the data obtained from the at least one primary source and the at least one secondary source, the data obtained from the at least one secondary source including future predicted data related to the thunderstorm.

8. A method of presenting information about a convective storm, the method comprising:

(a) obtaining a plurality of parameters for one or more past times, the present time, and one or more future times, the parameters being obtained from a set of weather data;

(b) associating the plurality of parameters with one or more convective storms identified from the weather data; and

(c) presenting a display of time-dependent characteristics of the one or more convective storms based on a set of severity indices determined from at least a subset of the plurality of parameters, each severity index describing an impact to property or population from a different threat associated with the one or more convective storms.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the set of severity indices includes a composite severity index, the composite severity index being an aggregate of two or more of the severity indices.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the set of weather data is obtained from one or more primary sources of weather data and one or more secondary sources of weather data, the primary sources providing weather radar data and the secondary sources providing non-radar weather data.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a subset of the future parameters of the convective storm are determined by synthesizing the data obtained from the one or more primary sources and the one or more secondary sources, the data obtained from the one or more secondary sources including future predicted data related to the one or more convective storms.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the convective storm is a thunderstorm.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the time-dependent characteristics are presented using a presentation sequence including an icon representing the convective storm that changes during the presentation sequence in response to the time variation of the characteristics.

14. A method of presenting information for a convective storm, the method comprising:

(a) obtaining weather data;

(b) identifying a convective storms represented by the weather data;

(c) associating with the current state of the convective storm a plurality of historical parameters corresponding to one or more previous states of the convective storm if at least one previous state of the convective storm has been identified;

(d) determining a plurality of current parameters related to the current state of the convective storm;

(e) forecasting a plurality of future parameters for the convective storm; and

(f) presenting a display of characteristics of the convective storm based on at least a first subset of the historical, current, and future parameters, wherein at least one of the current and future parameters includes a set of severity indices generated by analyzing a subset of the plurality of current and future parameters, each severity index representing a potential impact to people or population from a different threat associated with the convective storm.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

(g) transmitting a second subset of the plurality of historical, current, and forecasted parameters to an entity, the entity using the second subset parameters to provide an presentation of the convective storm to an end user.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein a subset of the forecasted parameters is calculated based at least in part on the historical and current parameters.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the forecasted parameters correspond to one or more projected states of the convective storm.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the set of severity indices includes a composite severity index, the composite severity index representing an aggregate representation of at least two of the severity indices.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein presenting the display of the characteristics includes preparing a presentation sequence based on the set of severity indices corresponding to the convective storm.
