Abstract

Oil sands ore containing bitumen is treated in a reactor chamber by ultrasonic oscillations impact such that cavitation of ore molecules occurs. The disintegration of the pulsating bubbles in the cavitation results in the separation of the oil, water, sand and air fractions of the oil sands. The oil fraction may be continuously extracted for subsequent refining processes.

Claims (11)

1. A method of treatment of oil sands ore comprising,

mixing said oil sands ore in a crushed form with a predetermined amount of water to form a pulp mixture,

injecting a spray of said pulp mixture into a reactor chamber by a vortex nozzle,

passing and spreading said pulp mixture through a resonance oscillation concentrating zone in said reactor chamber in a resonant oscillation area located between at least two rows of ultrasound oscillation transducers producing two different oscillating frequencies for creating a concentrated resonant wave of ultrasound oscillations wherein one row of said transducers produces ultrasound oscillations of a frequency range of 18-20 KHz, and a second row of said transducers produces ultrasound oscillations of an alternative frequency within a range of 5 to 9 KHz,

imposing said concentrated resonant wave of ultrasound oscillations to said spray of said pulp mixture to cause cavitation to occur in particles of said pulp mixture,

passing said pulp mixture following cavitation to a separation tower for water and sand fractions of said particles of said pulp mixture to be separated from oil fraction of said pulp mixture,

passing said oil fraction to a collection tank for further refining process,

releasing the water fraction in said water and sand fractions of said pulp mixture from a lower portion of said separation tower, and

discharging the sand fraction in said water and sand fractions of said pulp mixture from a bottom portion of said separation tower.

2. A method of treatment of oil sands according to claim 1 including placing acoustic reflectors in a path in said resonant oscillation area wherein said pulp mixture passes through said reactor chamber.

3. A method of treatment of oil sands ore according to claim 2 including thinning viscosity of said pulp mixture by thermally pre-heating said mixture to a temperature of 40-70° C.
