Internet protocol telephony voice/video message deposit and retrieval
View Patent ↗A method for signaling an Integrated Messaging System (IMS) on an Internet Protocol (IP) based network to deposit a message, including the steps of sending a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SIP INVITE request to the IMS indicating a message deposit action; receiving a corresponding SIP menage from the IMS agreeing to participate in the message deposit action; and sending an SIP acknowledge message to the IMS confirming receipt of the corresponding SIP message; and depositing the message in a destination mailbox. A method of signaling an IMS on an IP based network to retrieve a deposited message, the method including the steps of sending a SIP INVITE request to the IMS indicating a message retrieval action; receiving a corresponding SIP message from the IMS agreeing to participate in the message retrieval action; sending an SIP acknowledge message to the IMS confirming receipt of the corresponding SIP message; and retrieving the deposited message from a mailbox corresponding to known account information.
1. A method comprising:
generating a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) INVITE request corresponding to an Internet Protocol (IP) call placed to a called party,
wherein the SIP INVITE request includes a Require header added by a proxy server that comprises a parameter relating to redirecting the call, and wherein the Require header uses a SIP Require header protocol extension mechanism.
2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the parameter specifies a call forwarding condition associated with the called party.
3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the Require header comprises another parameter specifying an action to deposit or retrieve a message stored for the called party.
4. A method according to claim 3 , further comprising:
initiating transmission of the request to a messaging system to deposit the message within a mailbox associated with the called party.
5. A method according to claim 3 , wherein the message includes a voicemail.
6. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a busy response from a communicating device of the called party in response to an attempt to setup the call with the called party.
7. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:
determining that a communicating device of the called party is not available in response to an attempt to setup the call with the called party.
8. An apparatus comprising:
a processing device in communication with a memory, the processing device configured to execute instructions received from the memory to generate a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) INVITE request corresponding to an Internet Protocol (IP) call placed to a called party,
wherein the SIP INVITE request includes a Require header added by a proxy server and specifying a parameter relating to redirecting the call, and wherein the Require header uses a SIP Require header protocol extension mechanism.
9. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the parameter specifies a call forwarding condition associated with the called party.
10. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the Require header includes another parameter specifying an action to deposit or retrieve a message stored for the called party.
11. An apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the logic is further configured to initiate transmission of the request to a messaging system to deposit the message within a mailbox associated with the called party.
12. An apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the message includes a voicemail.
13. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the logic is further configured to receive a busy response from a communicating device of the called party in response to an attempt to setup the call with the called party.
14. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the logic is further configured to determine that a communicating device of the called party is not available in response to an attempt to setup the call with the called party.
15. An apparatus comprising:
a proxy server configured to generate a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) INVITE request corresponding to an Internet Protocol (IP) call placed to a called party,
wherein the SIP INVITE request includes a Require header added by the proxy server and specifying a parameter relating to redirecting the call, and wherein the Require header uses a SIP Require header protocol extension mechanism.
16. An apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein the parameter specifies a call forwarding condition associated with the called party.
17. An apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein the Require header includes another parameter specifying an action to deposit or retrieve a message stored for the called party.
18. An apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the proxy server is further configured to initiate transmission of the request to a messaging system to deposit the message within a mailbox associated with the called party.
19. An apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein a location manager provides gateway selection and mobility management services to the proxy server.
