Abstract

A method of controlling a choke valve of an engine with a controller is disclosed. Also disclosed is an automatic choke performing the method, an engine having the automatic choke, and an apparatus having the engine. The controller includes an electronic circuit, such as a programmable device, and is coupled to a temperature sensor and a motor. The method includes determining a temperature value using the temperature sensor, determining a time period to hold the choke valve in a first position, keeping the choke valve at the first position for the time period, moving the choke valve from the first position toward a second position using the motor, determining a count to hold the choke valve, keeping the choke valve at the second position for the count, and moving the choke valve from the second position toward a fully open position.

Claims (35)

1. An automatic choke configured to be connected to an engine, the automatic choke comprising:

a choke valve;

a motor configured to be connected to the choke valve and to move the choke valve in response to a motor control signal;

a temperature sensor configured to provide a temperature signal related to a temperature of the engine; and

a controller electrically connected to the motor and to the temperature sensor and including an electronic circuit, the controller being configured to

generate a first motor control signal that causes the motor to move the choke valve to a first position,

determine a time period to hold the choke valve at the first position, the determination of the time period being based on a temperature value, the temperature value having a relation to the temperature signal,

generate a second motor control signal to move the choke valve from the first position toward a second position,

determine an engine revolution count to hold the choke valve at the second position, the determination of the engine revolution count being based on the temperature value, and

generate a third motor control signal to move the choke valve toward a fully-open position.

2. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to generate a fourth motor control signal to move the choke valve toward a fully closed position prior to generating the first motor control signal.

3. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine the first position of the choke valve based on the temperature value, and to determine the second position of the choke valve based on the temperature value.

4. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to set the first position based on a position of the choke valve upon starting the engine.

5. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 3 , wherein the temperature value includes a first temperature value and a second temperature value, wherein the controller is configured to determine that the first position is based on the first temperature value and the controller is configured to determine that the second position is based on the second temperature value.

6. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the temperature value includes a first temperature value and a second temperature value, wherein the controller determines the time period to hold the choke valve based on the first temperature value and determines the count to hold the choke valve based on the second temperature value.

7. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the temperature value includes a first temperature value and a second temperature value, an wherein the controller is configured to determine the first temperature value prior to the engine starting, and wherein the controller is configured to determine the second temperature value after the engine starts.

8. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine a second time period to release the choke valve from the second position to the fully open position, and wherein controller is configured to generate the motor control signal to move the choke valve toward the fully-open position over the second time period.

9. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the automatic choke includes a coil configured to generate a count signal to the electronic circuit as a function of engine speed.

10. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the electronic circuit includes a programmable device.

11. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the engine further includes an ignition circuit configured to provide an ignition signal, and wherein the controller determines the count of engine revolutions based on the ignition signal.

12. An automatic choke as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the engine further includes an engine revolution detection circuit configured to provide an engine revolution signal having a relation to the rotation of a shaft of the engine, and wherein the controller determines the count of engine revolutions based on the engine revolution signal.

13. A method of controlling a choke valve of an engine with a controller, the controller having a programmable device and being coupled to a temperature sensor and to a motor, the method comprising:

determining a temperature value using the temperature sensor, the temperature value having a relation to a temperature of the engine;

moving the choke valve to a first position using the motor;

determining a time period to hold the choke valve in the first position, the determining of the time period being based on the temperature value;

keeping the choke valve at the first position for the time period;

moving the choke valve from the first position toward a second position using the motor;

determining a count of engine revolutions to hold the choke valve in the second position, the count of engine revolutions being based on the temperature value;

keeping the choke valve at the second position for the count of engine revolutions; and

moving the choke valve from the second position toward a fully open position after the passage of the count of engine revolutions.

14. A method as set forth in claim 13 , wherein the determining a temperature value includes determining a first temperature value and determining a second temperature value, wherein the determining the time period is based on the first temperature value, and wherein the determining the count is based on the second temperature value.

15. A method as set forth in claim 14 , wherein the determining a first temperature value occurs prior to starting the engine, and wherein the determining a second temperature value occurs after the engine starts.

16. A method as set forth in claim 13 , wherein the choke valve is moved to a fully closed position prior to the moving the choke valve to the first position.
