Abstract

An orthopedic device has at least one flexible or rigid frame member contoured to generally correspond to an anatomical limb. The device also includes a tightening system having a dial tensioning device and at least one cable and/or strap connected to the dial tensioning device. The dial tensioning device has a rotary ratchet permitting incremental adjustment of the cable and/or strap. Adjustment of the dial tensioner in a first direction secures the frame member to the limb.

Claims (10)

1. An orthopedic leg walker comprising:

a first semi-rigid or rigid posterior shell defining an upright leg portion, a foot portion extending generally perpendicular to the leg portion, and an ankle portion connecting the leg and foot portions, the posterior shell including lateral and medial wing portions extending from the posterior shell towards an anterior side of the orthopedic leg walker;

a second semi-rigid or rigid dorsal shell contoured to generally correspond to an anatomical limb and to complement the posterior shell and moveable with respect to the posterior shell to provide access to an interior space defined by the posterior shell;

a tightening mechanism including a dial tensioning device for connecting and for simultaneously and incrementally drawing the second member towards the first member, thereby limiting access to the interior space, wherein the dial tensioning device is positioned on the second member and is arranged to take up a cable carried on the second member for selective engagement with the first member, the cable extending at least along the leg and ankle portions of the posterior shell;

wherein the orthopedic leg walker includes a hinge device connecting the first end portion of the dorsal shell to a toe portion of the posterior shell located at an end of the foot portion and the hinge device includes at least one pin rotatable in a side portion of the first end portion of the posterior shell thereby defining a clam-shell configuration, segments of the cable located between the posterior and dorsal shells extendable as the dorsal shell is pivoted relative to the posterior shell.

2. The orthopedic leg walker according to claim 1 , wherein the posterior shell defines a clearance along the entirety of the anterior side of the orthopedic leg walker.

3. The orthopedic leg walker according to claim 2 , wherein the dorsal shell fits within the clearance defined by the posterior shell.

4. The orthopedic leg walker according to claim 1 , further comprising a retainer secured along a side of the posterior shell, the retainer removably supporting a cable extending from the tightening mechanism.

5. The orthopedic leg walker according to claim 1 , wherein the posterior shell defines a U-shaped clearance hole forming a projection upon which a cable extending from the tightening mechanism is removably supported.

6. The orthopedic leg walker according to claim 1 , wherein the cable is routed across an anterior surface of the dorsal shell in connection with retainers formed along the posterior shell.
