Abstract

A construct for a hockey blade that includes a foam core. The foam core includes a first core face, a second core face, and a core edge. A first layer of resin preimpregnated tape is wrapped continuously around the first core face, the core edge and the second core face. A thread is stitched along the first layer of preimpregnated tape. A second layer of resin preimpregnated tape wrapped continuously around the first layer of resin preimpregnated tape.

Claims (41)

1. A construct for a hockey blade comprising:

a foam core, the foam core comprising a first core face, a second core face, and a core edge;

a first layer of tape wrapped continuously around the first core face, the core edge and the second core face to create a wrapped core; wherein the wrapped core has a first wrapped face, a wrapped core edge, and a second wrapped face;

a non adhesive scrim on the first wrapped face and the second wrapped face; and

thread stitched along the non adhesive scrim wherein the thread extends into and through the foam core and wherein the thread creates a pillow effect on the construct.

2. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the non adhesive scrim is applied to portions of the first layer of tape that extend along the first core face and the second core face.

3. The construct as in claim 2 wherein the non adhesive scrim is formed from of one of woven fiberglass and polyester.

4. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the thread is one of high strength polyester, carbon fiber, and carbon fiber preimpregnated with resin.

5. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the thread extends from the first wrapped face through the foam core to the second wrapped face to add structural and shear strength and rigidity between the first wrapped face and the second wrapped face.

6. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the construct is stitched along the first layer of tape in a series of at least three parallel lines of stitching.

7. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the construct is stitched in a criss-cross or diamond pattern.

8. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the first and second layers of tape comprise a combination of multiple pieces of tape and sheets that overlap.

9. The construct as in claim 1 wherein a bond is formed between the foam core and the layers of tape.

10. The construct as in claim 1 wherein the foam core generally forms the body of a blade for a hockey stick.

11. The construct as in claim 1 further comprising a second layer of tape wrapped continuously around the first core face, the core edge, and the second core face.

12. The construct as in claim 11 wherein the second layer is substantially thicker than the first layer.

13. A construct for a hockey blade comprising:

a foam core, the foam core comprising a first core face, a second core face, and a core edge;

a first layer of tape on the first core face, the core edge and the second core face to create a wrapped core and wherein the wrapped core has a first wrapped face, a wrapped core edge, and a second wrapped face;

thread stitched along the first layer of tape wherein the thread stitched along the first layer of tape creates a pillow effect on the construct.

14. The construct as in claim 13 further comprising a non adhesive scrim applied to portions of the first layer of tape that extend along the first core face and the second core face.

15. The construct as in claim 14 wherein the non adhesive scrim is formed from of one of woven fiberglass and polyester.

16. The construct as in claim 13 wherein the thread is one of high strength polyester, carbon fiber, and carbon fiber preimpregnated with resin.

17. The construct as in claim 13 wherein the thread extends from the first wrapped face through the foam core to the second wrapped face to add structural and shear strength and rigidity between the first wrapped face and the second wrapped face.

18. The construct as in claim 13 wherein the construct is stitched along the first layer of tape in a series of at least three parallel lines of stitching, in a criss-cross pattern, or diamond pattern.

19. The construct as in claim 13 wherein a bond is formed between the foam core and the tape.

20. The construct as in claim 13 wherein the foam core generally forms the body of a blade for a hockey stick.

21. The construct as in claim 13 further comprising a second layer of tape wrapped continuously around the first core face, the core edge and the second core face.

22. The construct as in claim 21 wherein the first layer of tape is wrapped at least one to three times continuously around the first core face, the core edge, and the second core face prior to stitching the thread along the first layer of tape and the second layer of tape is wrapped at least five to nine times after stitching the thread along first layer of tape.

23. The construct as in claim 21 wherein the first layer of tape is thicker than the second layer of tape.

24. A construct for a hockey blade comprising:

at least one foam core having a first layer of tape wrapped continuously around a first core face, a core edge and a second core face to create a wrapped core; wherein the wrapped core has a first wrapped face, a wrapped core edge, and a second wrapped face;

a first piece of non adhesive scrim on the first wrapped face and a second piece of non adhesive scrim on the second wrapped face forming a sandwich structure; and

a thread stitched along the first layer of tape and the first piece and the second piece of non adhesive scrim wherein the thread stitched along the first layer of tape creates a pillow effect on the construct.

25. The construct as in claim 24 wherein the first piece and the second piece of non adhesive scrim are formed from of one of woven fiberglass and polyester.

26. The construct as in claim 24 wherein the thread is one of high strength polyester, carbon fiber, and carbon fiber preimpregnated with resin.

27. The construct as in claim 24 wherein the construct is stitched along the first layer of tape in a series of at least three parallel lines of stitching, in a criss-cross pattern, or diamond pattern.

28. The construct as in claim 24 further comprising a second layer of tape wrapped continuously around the first layer of tape and on top of the thread and around the first piece and the second piece of non adhesive scrim.

29. The construct as in claim 28 wherein the first layer of tape is thicker than the second layer of tape.

30. The construct as in claim 28 wherein the thread extends from the first wrapped face through the foam core to the second wrapped face to add structural and shear strength and rigidity between the first wrapped face and the second wrapped face.

31. The construct as in claim 28 wherein a bond is formed between the foam core and the layers of tape.
