Abstract

A method of treating an amyloid disease, or a disease characterized by α-synuclein or NAC fibrillogenesis, in a mammalian subject. The method includes administering to the mammal a therapeutically effective amount of a various disclosed proanthocyanidins or a proanthocyanidin characterized by disclosed general formulae. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a proanthocyanidin and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. The therapeutic amount of the proanthocyanidin is selected for efficacy in treating amyloid, α-synuclein or NAC fibrillogenesis in a mammalian subject.

57 . A method for reducing an amount of β-amyloid protein in a mammal by administering a procyanidin to the mammal.

58 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the mammal is a human.

59 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the procyanidin is a dimer or trimer of epicatechin and/or catechin units.

60 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is selected from the group consisting of procyanidin type B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, and B8.

61 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

62 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is catechin-4α->8-epicatechin.

63 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is epiafzelechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

64 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the procyanidin trimer is epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

65 . A method for improving cognition in a mammal by administering a procyanidin to the mammal.

66 . The method of claim 65 , wherein the mammal is a human.

67 . The method of claim 65 , wherein the procyanidin is a dimer or trimer of epicatechin and/or catechin units.

68 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is selected from the group consisting of procyanidin type B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, and B8.

69 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

70 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is catechin-4-α->8-epicatechin.

71 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is epiafzelechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

72 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the procyanidin trimer is epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

73 . A method for improving memory in a mammal by administering a procyanidin to the mammal.

74 . The method of claim 73 , wherein the mammal is a human.

75 . The method of claim 73 , wherein the procyanidin is a dimer or trimer of epicatechin and/or catechin units.

76 . The method of claim 73 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is selected from the group consisting of procyanidin type B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, and B8.

77 . The method of claim 76 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is epicatechin-4β->8-epicatechin.

78 . The method of claim 76 , wherein the procyanidin dimer is catechin-4α->8-epicatechin.
