Abstract

The present invention relates to cationically and radically curable coating compositions for coating a surface. The coating compositions consist essentially of a radically or cationically curable monomer, and a metal salt. The metal salt is chosen so that it is reduced at the surface to be coated, and where the standard reduction potential of the metal salt is greater than the standard reduction potential of the surface, and where when the composition is placed in contact with the surface, the metal salt of the composition is reduced at the surface, thereby initiating cure of the curable component in the compositions. Redox mediated cure of the coating compositions results in a coating or film on the surface. The invention also provides for functionalization of surfaces. Cross-linking of the coating occurs directly on the surface.

Claims (34)

1. A combination comprising:

a surface constructed from a metal, metal oxide, or metal alloy, and

a curable coating composition on the surface, the curable coating composition consisting essentially of:

(i) a cationically curable component; and

(ii) at least one metal salt having a standard reduction potential greater than the standard reduction potential of the surface,

such that the metal salt is reduced at the surface, thereby initiating cure of the cationically curable component of the composition.

2. The combination according to claim 1 , wherein the metal salt comprises a transition metal cation.

3. The combination according to claim 2 , wherein the transition metal cation is selected from silver, copper and combinations thereof.

4. The combination according to claim 2 , wherein the metal salt includes a counterion selected from the group consisting of ClO 4 − , BF 4 − , PF 6 − , SbF 6 − , AsF 6 − , (C 6 F 5 ) 4 B, (C 6 F 5 ) 4 Ga, carborane, triflimide, bis-triflimide, and combinations thereof.

5. The combination according to claim 1 , wherein the surface is selected from the group consisting of iron, steel, mild steel, gritblasted mild steel, aluminium, aluminium oxide, copper, zinc, zinc oxide, zinc bichromate, and stainless steel.

6. The combination according to claim 1 , wherein the cationically curable component has at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of epoxy, vinyl, vinyl ether, oxetane, thioxetane, episulfide, tetrahydrofuran, oxazoline, oxazine, lactone, trioxane, dioxane, styrene and combinations thereof.

7. A combination comprising

a surface constructed from a metal, metal oxide, or metal alloy, and

a curable coating composition on the surface, the curable coating composition consisting essentially of:

(i) a radically curable component;

(ii) a free radical generating component; and

(iii) at least one metal salt having a standard reduction potential greater than the standard reduction potential of the surface,

such that the metal salt is reduced at the surface, thereby initiating cure of the radically curable component of the composition.

8. The combination according to claim 7 , wherein the metal salt comprises a transition metal cation.

9. The combination according to claim 8 , wherein the transition metal cation is selected from the group consisting of copper, iron, zinc and combinations thereof.

10. The combination according to claim 7 , wherein the metal salt includes a counterion selected from the group consisting of naphthenate, ethylhexanoate, benzoate, nitrate, chloride, acetylacetonate, ClO 4 − , BF 4 − , PF 6 − , SbF 6 − , AsF 6 − , (C 6 F 5 ) 4 B, (C 6 F 5 ) 4 Ga, carborane, triflimide, bis-triflimide, and combinations thereof.
