Abstract

Multiple attempts can be made to match received information associated with a work and one of multiple identifiers stored in a database. Each of the identifiers in the database is uniquely associated with one of a plurality of specific works. A first search can be made to determine if an identifier in the received information includes an identifier that matches one of identifiers stored in the database. If the identifier in the received information does not match any of the identifiers in the database, a second matching attempt can be made to determine if the received attributes match attributes of a work associated with one of the identifiers in the database. Based on the results of the matching, various actions can be taken to associate or assign one of the unique identifiers with the work related to the received information.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

receiving information associated with a work;

accessing a database comprising a plurality of first identifiers, each of the plurality of first identifiers uniquely associated with one of a plurality of specific works;

performing a first search to determine if the information includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

generating a first match indicator in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

performing a second search in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work does not include a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers, the second search determining if the information includes a first attribute of the work matching a second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

generating a second match indicator in response to the second search determining that the information associated with the work includes a first attribute of the work matching the second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

generating a no-match indicator in response to the first search failing to yield a match and the second search failing to yield a match;

associating the work with a new identifier in response to the no-match indicator; and

adding the new identifier to the plurality of first identifiers.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, in response to the first match indicator, the second identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second match indicator includes a third identifier, the third identifier matching the first identifier associated with the one of the plurality of specific works having the second attribute that matches the first attribute.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

storing, in response to the second match indicator, the third identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first attribute includes an artist name and a title.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first attribute includes a timestamp and a station identifier.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the second match indicator further comprises:

separating the first attribute into a plurality of first sub-parts;

separating the second attribute into a plurality of second sub-parts; and

comparing the first sub-parts to the second sub-parts.

8. A system comprising:

memory;

a communications interface coupled to the memory, the communications interface configured to receive information associated with a work;

a processor operably coupled to the communications interface and to the memory, the processor configured to:

access a database comprising a plurality of first identifiers, each of the plurality of first identifiers uniquely associated with one of a plurality of specific works;

perform a first search to determine if the information includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

generate a first match indicator in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

perform a second search in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work does not include a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers, the second search determining if the information includes a first attribute of the work matching a second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

generate a second match indicator in response to the second search determining that the information associated with the work includes a first attribute of the work matching the second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

generate a no-match indicator in response to the first search failing to yield a match and the second search failing to yield a match;

associate the work with a new identifier in response to the no-match indicator; and

add the new identifier to the plurality of first identifiers.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to store, in response to the first search yielding a match, the second identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second match indicator includes a third identifier, the third identifier matching the first identifier associated with the one of the plurality of specific works having the second attribute that matches the first attribute.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

storing, in response to the second match indicator, the third identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one attribute includes an artist name and a title.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one attribute includes a timestamp and a station identifier.

14. A non-transitory computer readable medium tangibly embodying a program of computer executable instructions configured to be stored in a memory and executed by a processor, the program of instructions comprising:

at least one instruction to receive information associated with a work;

at least one instruction to access a database comprising a plurality of first identifiers, each of the plurality of first identifiers uniquely associated with one of a plurality of specific works;

at least one instruction to perform a first search to determine if the information includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

at least one instruction to generate a first match indicator in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work includes a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers;

at least one instruction to perform a second search in response to the first search determining that the information associated with the work does not include a second identifier matching one of the plurality of first identifiers, the second search determining if the information includes a first attribute of the work matching a second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

at least one instruction to generate a second match indicator in response to the second search determining that the information associated with the work includes a first attribute of the work matching the second attribute of one of the plurality of specific works;

at least one instruction to generate a no-match indicator in response to the first search failing to yield a match and the second search failing to yield a match;

at least one instruction to associate the work with a new identifier in response to the no-match indicator; and

at least one instruction to add the new identifier to the plurality of first identifiers.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , further comprising:

at least one instruction to store, in response to the first match indicator, the second identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the second match indicator includes a third identifier, the third identifier matching the first identifier associated with the one of the plurality of specific works having the second attribute that matches the first attribute.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising:

at least one instruction to store, in response to the second match indicator, the third identifier as part of a collection of information indicating works that have been publicly performed.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first attribute includes an artist name and a title.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first attribute includes a timestamp and a station identifier.
