Abstract

The invention relates to a valve used in medical procedures. More specifically the invention relates to an introducer sheath valve used in minimally invasive and conventional surgical procedures. The valve may accommodate a wide range of surgical implement diameters, shapes, and multiple implements without imposing the high frictional forces of known valves.

Claims (31)

1. A method of assembling an introducer sheath valve comprising:

(a) providing an outer tube formed of an elastomeric material;

(b) attaching a ring to one end of the outer tube and attaching a ring having a fill port to an opposite end of the outer tube forming an outer tube assembly;

(c) attaching a ring to one end of an inner tube and attaching a ring to an opposite end of the inner tube forming an inner tube assembly, wherein the inner tube comprises a collapsible portion;

(d) inserting the inner tube assembly into the outer tube assembly;

(e) attaching the inner tube assembly to a front fitting;

(f) attaching the outer tube assembly onto a surface of the front fitting;

(g) attaching the inner tube assembly to a rear fitting;

(h) attaching the ring having the fill port to the rear fitting;

(i) pressurizing a space between the inner tube and the outer tube to collapse the collapsible portion of the inner tube by filling the space via the fill port, the outer tube distending upon pressurizing the space providing a visual indicator that the space has been pressurized.

2. A method of assembling an introducer sheath valve comprising:

(a) providing an outer tube having opposite ends and defining an hourglass shape;

(b) providing an inner tube having opposite ends;

(c) attaching a ring to each end of the outer tube forming an outer tube assembly;

(d) attaching a ring to each end of the inner tube forming an inner tube assembly;

(e) inserting the inner tube assembly into the outer tube assembly;

(f) attaching the inner tube assembly to a front fitting;

(g) attaching the outer tube assembly onto a surface of the front fitting;

(h) attaching the inner tube assembly to a rear fitting;

(i) filling a space between the inner tube and the outer tube with a substance to pressurize the space to a predetermined pressure, thereby collapsing a portion of the inner tube and distending the hourglass shape of the outer tube;

(j) attaching the ring on the outer tube assembly to the rear fitting.

3. A method of assembling an introducer sheath valve comprising:

(a) providing an outer tube having opposite ends, the outer tube being formed of an elastomeric material;

(b) providing an inner tube having opposite ends, the inner tube being formed of a drape-able material;

(c) inserting the inner tube assembly into the outer tube assembly;

(d) sealing a space between the inner and outer tubes; and

(e) providing a fitting in fluid communication with the space between the inner and outer tubes such that upon pressurizing the space using the fitting the outer tube distends from an hourglass shape to provide a visual indicator that a desired pressure has been achieved in the space.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the sealing of the space is accomplished by at least one of the following: interference fit, adhesion, thermal bond, and insert molding.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the interference fit is formed using at least one o-ring.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the space is configured to maintain a desired pressure imparted into the space by an external source.

7. The method of claim 6 , where in the desired pressure is attained by at least one of the following: finger pressure, a leaf spring, and filled syringe.
