Abstract

A method for producing a substantially desulfurized a hydrocarbon fuel stream at temperatures less than 100° C. The method includes providing a nondesulfurized fuel cell hydrocarbon fuel stream that may include water and passing the fuel stream sequentially through a zeolite Y adsorbent and a selective sulfur adsorbent. The zeolite Y adsorbent may be exchanged with copper ions. The method produces a substantially desulfurized hydrocarbon fuel stream containing less than 50 ppb sulfur.

Claims (22)

1. A process for desulfurization of a hydrocarbon feed stream comprising

providing a hydrocarbon feed stream, contaminated with sulfur compounds,

passing the sulfur contaminated feed stream through a zeolite Y adsorbent, wherein the zeolite Y adsorbent comprises a copper exchanged zeolite Y,

passing the feed stream over a hydrated alumina adsorbent after passing over the copper exchanged zeolite Y, and

subsequently passing the feed stream through a selective sulfur adsorbent, wherein the feed stream is substantially desulfurized and wherein the temperature of the feed stream while passing through the zeolite Y adsorbent and the selective adsorbent is below about 100° C.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the zeolite Y adsorbent comprises a zeolite Y ion exchanged with a cation selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag, Mn, Mg, Fe, Ca, Ce, La, Sr, Pr, Nd and mixtures thereof.

3. The process of claim 2 , wherein the copper exchanged zeolite Y is further exchanged with metal ions selected from the group consisting of zinc, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, copper, iron, manganese, silver, gold, scandium, lithium, cerium, lanthanum, magnesium, and combinations thereof.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the selective sulfur adsorbent comprises copper oxide and one or more manganese compounds.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the selective sulfur adsorbent comprises one or more manganese compounds and an iron compound, such as iron oxide.

6. The process of claim 1 , wherein

the selective sulfur adsorbent comprises copper oxide, an iron compound and one or more manganese compounds.

7. The process of claim 1 , further comprising controlling the temperature of the feed stream while passing through the zeolite Y adsorbent and the selective sulfur adsorbent to below about 60° C.

8. The process of claim 1 , wherein the sulfur containing hydrocarbon feed stream is desulfurized to about 50 ppb or less.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbon feed stream further comprises water.

10. A process for desulfurization of a hydrocarbon fuel cell feed stream comprising

providing a hydrocarbon feed stream contaminated with sulfur compounds,

passing the sulfur contaminated feed stream through a sequential sulfur adsorbent system at a temperature below about 100° C. comprising, in sequence, a zeolite Y adsorbent comprising a copper exchanged zeolite Y, a hydrated alumina adsorbent, and a selective sulfur adsorbent selected from the group consisting of a) manganese compound(s) and copper oxide, b) manganese compound(s) and iron oxide and c) manganese compound(s), iron oxide and copper oxide to produce a hydrocarbon feed stream which has been substantially desulfurized, and

delivering the substantially desulfurized hydrocarbon feed stream to a fuel cell processing train.

11. The process of claim 10 further comprising controlling the temperature of the feed stream while passing through the zeolite Y adsorbent and the selective sulfur adsorbent to below about 60° C.

12. The process of claim 10 , wherein the hydrocarbon feed stream further comprises water.

13. A sulfur adsorbent system for use in removing sulfur from a hydrocarbon used in a fuel cell processing train, the sulfur adsorbent system comprising a zeolite Y adsorbent comprising a copper exchanged zeolite Y, a hydrated alumina adsorbent, and a selective sulfur adsorbent, wherein the sulfur adsorbent system is configured such that the hydrocarbon sequentially passes through the zeolite Y adsorbent, the hydrated alumina adsorbent, and then the selective sulfur adsorbent at a temperature below 100° C.

14. The sulfur adsorbent system of claim 13 wherein the selective sulfur adsorbent comprise one or more manganese compounds combined with a metal compound selected from iron compounds, copper compounds, and mixture of iron and copper compounds.
