Abstract

In one embodiment, a scheme is provided for customization of a mobile communications device's data session retry mechanism in a wireless packet data service network. Upon detecting that a cause code has been returned by a node disposed in a wireless packet data service network, a structure is interrogated to determine if the cause code is mapped to a flag relating to the device's data session retry mechanism. Responsive to determining that the received cause code is mapped as a critical cause code, the data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device is disabled so that further signaling messages towards the network are prevented.

Claims (29)

1. A network node, comprising:

a structure configured to process a data session activation request from a mobile communications device;

a structure configured to receive a code responsive to the data session activation request;

a structure configured to query a database to determine whether the code received at the node is identified in the database as a no retry code; and

a structure configured to a communicate to the mobile communications device whether the code received at the node is identified in the database as a no retry code, thereby disabling a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device if the code is identified in the database as a no retry code, wherein the code is identified as a no retry code by a retry flag in the database.

2. The node of claim 1 , wherein the code is a cause code.

3. The node of claim 1 , wherein the code is received via a wireless packet data service network.

4. The node of claim 1 , wherein the data session requested is a packet data protocol (PDP).

5. The node of claim 1 , wherein the database is integrated with the node.

6. A method in a mobile communications device operable in a wireless network, the method comprising:

after the mobile communications device is attached to the wireless network, requesting activation of a data session with a node disposed within the wireless network;

receiving a reject message from the node in response to the request for activation of the data session, the reject message indicating a no retry code; and

in response to the no retry code indicated in the reject message, the mobile communications device no longer requesting activation of a data session with the node, wherein the no retry code is mapped to a no retry behavior relating to a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein no longer requesting activation of a data session with the node comprises disabling a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein no longer requesting activation of a data session with the node comprises deactivating a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device.

9. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the reject message is received via one of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, an Enhanced Data Rates for Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Evolution (EDGE) network, a 3rd Generation (3G) network, an Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (IDEN) and a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network.

10. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the data session requested is a packet data protocol (PDP) context.

11. A mobile communications device, comprising:

a logic module for attaching to a wireless network;

a logic module for requesting activation of a data session with the wireless network after the mobile communications device has attached to the wireless network;

a logic module for detecting that a code has been received at the mobile communications device from the wireless network in response to the requesting activation of the data session; and

a logic module for disabling a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device if the code is identified as a no retry code;

wherein the logic modules are stored on a tangible computer readable medium and further wherein the no retry code is mapped to a no retry behavior relating to a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device.

12. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , wherein the no retry code is mapped to a no retry indicium relating to a data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device.

13. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , wherein the logic module for attaching to the wireless network comprises a logic module for generating and sending an attach request message to a node within the network.

14. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , wherein the data session requested is a packet data protocol ( PDP) context.

15. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , wherein the logic module for requesting activation of a data session with the wireless network after the mobile communications device has attached to the wireless network comprises a logic module for sending an activate PDP context request message to a node within the network.

16. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , wherein the logic module for detecting that a code has been received at the mobile communications device from the wireless network in response to the request for activation of the data session comprises a logic module for receiving an attach reject reply message.

17. The mobile communications device according to claim 11 , further comprising a structure having a database mapping the code to a flag relating to the mobile communications device's data session retry functionality.
