Abstract

Methods, computer systems, and computer readable media provide for automated control of the status of network address space. Blocks of networking address space assigned to a network may be allocated from a free status to a new status based upon a request to allocate a particular size block. Blocks of networking address space assigned to a network that have been allocated to a new status may be deallocated to return to a free status based upon a request to deallocate the chosen block. Blocks of networking address space assigned to a network that have been allocated and otherwise manipulated such as through a lend from another network may be reclaimed for the original network upon a request to reclaim the chosen block.

Claims (44)

1. A computer-implemented method of reclaiming a portion of a network address space defined in a definitional listing stored on a computer, the method comprising:

receiving at the computer a reclaim request comprising a specification of a block of network addresses and an action;

executing an operation on the computer to mark all free blocks of addresses in the network address space affected by the reclaim request with a reclaim pending status in the definitional listing;

executing an operation on the computer to determine whether an entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing;

upon determining that the entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status, executing an operation on the computer to perform the action in regard to the block of network addresses;

upon determining that the entirety of the block of network addresses is not marked with the reclaim pending status, executing an operation on the computer to monitor a status of the network address space within the definitional listing to detect new free blocks of addresses affected by the reclaim request;

upon detecting a new free block of addresses affected by the reclaim request, executing an operation on the computer to mark the new free block of addresses with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing; and

repeating the execution of the determining, monitoring, and marking operations on the computer until the entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status, wherein marking a block of addresses with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing prevents allocation, movement, coalescing, or removal of the block of addresses within the definitional listing.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the specification of the block of network addresses comprises a starting network address and a mask size.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the specification of the block of network addresses comprises a starting network address and a network mask.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the specification of the block of network addresses comprises a starting network address and an ending network address.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises marking the block of network addresses as free within the definitional listing.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises removing the block of network addresses from the definitional listing.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises moving the block of network addresses from one network to another network within the definitional listing.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises allocating the block of network addresses in the definitional listing.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein marking the new free block of addresses with the reclaim pending status comprises executing a routine on the computer to split larger free blocks in half one or more times, marking the half of the larger free block entirely included in the range of addresses with the reclaim pending status while returning the half of the larger free block not affected by the reclaim request to free status.

10. A computer-readable storage medium containing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

receive a reclaim request to reclaim a block of network addresses, the reclaim request comprising an action to perform in regard to the block of network addresses;

mark all free blocks of addresses in a network address space affected by the reclaim request with a reclaim pending status;

determine whether an entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status;

upon determining that the entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status, perform the action in regard to the range of network addresses;

upon determining that the entirety of the block of network addresses is not marked with the reclaim pending status, monitor a status of the network address space containing the block of network addresses to detect new free blocks of addresses affected by the reclaim request;

upon detecting a new free block of addresses affected by the reclaim request, mark the new free block of addresses with the reclaim pen ding status; and

repeat the determining, monitoring, and marking operations until the entirety of the block of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the request to reclaim the block of network addresses comprises a starting network address and one of a mask size, a network mask, or an ending network address.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the action comprises one of freeing the block of network addresses, removing the block of network addresses from the network address space, moving the block of network addresses from one network to another network within the network address space, or allocating the block of network addresses in the network address space.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein marking a block of addresses with the reclaim pending status prevents allocation, movement, coalescing, or removal of the block of addresses by the computer.

14. A system for controlling the status of a network address space, comprising:

a computer;

a definitional listing defining a network address space and accessible by the computer;

a user interface configured to allow a user to request reclamation of a range of network addresses within the network address space; and

a manager application executing on the computer and configured to

display the user interface to the user,

receive a reclaim request from the user to reclaim a range of network addresses,

mark all free blocks of addresses in the network address space affected by the reclaim request with a reclaim pending status in the definitional listing,

determine whether an entirety of the range of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing,

upon determining that the entirety of the range of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status, perform an action in regard to the range of network addresses,

upon determining that the entirety of the range of network addresses is not marked with the reclaim pending status, monitor a status of the network address space within the definitional listing to detect new free blocks of addresses affected by the reclaim request,

upon detecting a new free block of addresses affected by the reclaim request, mark the new free block of addresses with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing, and

repeating the determining, monitoring, and marking operations until the entirety of the range of network addresses is marked with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the reclaim request comprises a starting network address and one of a mask size, a network mask, or an ending network address.

The system of claim 14 , wherein the action comprises one of marking the range of network addresses as free within the definitional listing, removing the range of network addresses from the definitional listing, moving the range of network addresses from one network to another network within the definitional listing, or allocating the range of network addresses in the definitional listing.

The system of claim 14 , wherein marking the new free block of addresses with the reclaim pending status comprises splitting larger free blocks in half one or more times, marking the half of the larger free block entirely included in the range of network addresses with the reclaim pending status while returning the half of the larger free block not affected by the reclaim request to free status.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein marking a block of addresses with the reclaim pending status in the definitional listing prevents allocation, movement, coalescing, or removal of the block of addresses within the definitional listing.
