System and method for channel-adaptive error-resilient transmission to multiple transceivers
View Patent ↗In a passive optical network, a downstream transmission rate from an OLT to multiple ONTs can be optimized by matching a transmission scheme for frames addressed to a channel to the downstream transmission characteristics of the channel. An FEC coding can be made channel dependent so that channels with low error rates can use minimal protection, and therefore minimal overhead, while channels with high input bit error rates can use the level of FEC coding required to produce a desired output bit error rate.
1. An optical network unit for a passive optical network, the optical network unit configured to:
receive one or more frames and control information from an optical line termination device;
apply a forward error correction code scheme to the one or more frames responsive to the control information received;
count the number of errors corrected by the forward error correction code scheme; and
report the number of errors to the optical line termination device.
2. The optical network unit according to claim 1 configured to:
receive a control message from the optical line termination device;
configure a forward error correction code scheme in accordance with an instruction in the control message; and
apply the configured forward error correction code scheme to one or more frames subsequently received from the optical line termination device.
3. The optical network unit according to claim 2 configured to enter a sleep mode if the one or more frames subsequently received from the optical line termination device cannot be decoded.
